Day Trip in Ushuaia

0 Comments 26 October 2011

If you’re traveling to Ushuaia but don’t have eons of time to spend, don’t worry—there’s still plenty of ways to enjoy the southernmost city in the world.

From canoeing in the Lapataia River to exploring the legendary Beagle Channel, there are plenty of activities to do during a day trip in Ushuaia.

There is a lot to explore in the beautiful Tierra del Fuego National Park, located on the island of Tierra del Fuego. The park is home to a variety of animal species(including the Andean fox, the Andean Condor and the guanaco) as well as a diverse range of natural phenomenon (like waterfalls, mountains and forests). The Senda Costera (Coastal Path) is an ideal trail for a day trip in Ushuaia that affords absolutely breathtaking scenery along the Beagle Channel. At the end of this trail, you’ll find the Roca Lake and the stunningly beautiful Lapataia River, where you can rent a canoe and coast down the river to the Lapataia Bay on the Beagle Channel.

As the park is only a bit over 6 milesoutside of Ushuaia, it is easily accessible by car or by train. The famous End of the World Train is highly recommended for the fantastic valley scenery it provides for its passengers.

Another great option to take advantage of during a day trip in Ushuaia is a cruise on the historic Beagle Channel. This narrow strait of water divides the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego and connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A cruise on the Channel will give you a wonderful panoramic view of Ushuaia Bay and the famous Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse. You’ll also see the islands of De Los Lobos (sea lion island) y De Los Pajaros (bird island), and the large groups of sea lions and marine birds, such as penguins, that often congregate there.

Outside of the national park itself, the Tierra del Fuego archipelago is an awesome place to visit during a day trip in Ushuaia. If you’re a hiker or nature enthusiast, the Alvear Glacier Caves are a must-see. These ice caves, which have formed within a thousand-year-old glacier, are located about 16 miles outside of the city proper, so this activity requires a little extra planning-ahead. Visitors can hike to one of the highest altitudes on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago to explore this natural wonder.

If you’re a skier traveling to Ushuaia during the wintertime (June to October), you should definitely take advantage of Cerro Castor, the main ski center in Tierra del Fuego National Park. The mountain resort was only formed in 1999, making it an almost brand-new attraction that features top-quality snow conditions and amazing scenery. Depending on the month, 1-day ski passes range from 100-240 Argentine pesos per person.

Finally, if you’re looking for an exciting activity that’s just a bit out of the ordinary, check out Heli Ushuaia, a company that provides the unique experience of flying over the City at the End of the World in a helicopter. There are several different routes you can choose from: one excursion flies over the beautiful Esmeralda Lagoon; another more general route whizzes high above the entire city, giving passengers a grand tour of the area from the sky.

If you happen to be just passing through the End of the World for a night or less, rest assured that with a little extra planning, you’ll be able to enjoy the best of what Ushuaia has to offer in only a day.
