The northwest province of Salta, Argentina is famous for its lovely weather, colonial architecture and stunning natural landscape.

But what to do if you only have a day or two to spend there? Don’t worry—there are plenty of distinctly fun ways to enjoy a day trip in Salta.

One of the best parts about Salta is the teleférico (cable car/gondola), beginning in San Martin Park and extending to the very top of the San Bernando Mountain. From the top, you’ll get an impressive view of the entire city and the mountains that surround it.

If you’re interested in something a little (or a lot) more thrilling during your day trip in Salta, check out some of the great outdoor activities nearby. You can enjoy Salta’s natural landscape in a number of exciting ways, including white-water rafting or kayaking on the Río Juramento, mountain biking, zip-lining, horse-back riding and of course, hiking / trekking.

The Río Juramento is considered Class III, meaning it’s safest for intermediate-level rafters. A two-hour rafting session, led by professional guides and including the required equipment and lunch, runs at about 200 Argentine pesos (or $50 USD) per person.

Zip-lining is another outdoor activity that will be perfect for that dose of adventure you’re looking for during your day trip in Salta. A popular zip line is locally called the, Vuelo de Condor (Flight of the Condor), and flies high above the Río Juramento. Thrill-seekers can zoom above the canyon for 200 Argentine pesos a pop.

Another popular outdoor activity for a day trip in Salta: 4-x-4 safaris! Although there are various options for adventurers who wish to spend an entire day exploring Salta’s diverse terrain atop a heavy-duty 4-x-4 truck, one and two-hour long excursions are available as well. The distinct safaris that Salta Rafting provide range in difficulty from low to high, which means there’s something for everyone.

If you want to experience Salta’s terrain firsthand but are looking for something a bit milder than zip-lining or white-water rafting, there are plenty of low-difficulty trails and hikes just begging to be explored. The Los Cardones National Park is home to gorgeous scenery, hundreds of cactuses and dinosaur fossils.

Another delightful natural wonder is the Quebrada de San Lorenzo (San Lorenzo Gorge), located in the small town of San Lorenzo, just a few minutes outside of Salta City. The mountains surrounding this beautiful gorge are covered by the Montana Forest, where sparkling-clear streams of water wind in and out of the trees. The natural beauty that surrounds this charming town makes it any explorer’s dream come true.

Of course, if you’re really pressed for time and prefer an urban atmosphere during = your day trip in Salta, you’ll be more than satisfied with what the city of Salta itself has to offer. The colonial Hispanic architecture that lines the city streets gives off an authentic vibe that will make you question whether you’re in Argentina or Spain. Two gorgeous historical monuments especially worth visiting: the Salta Cathedral and the Baroque San Francisco Church.

Don’t pass up the chance to visit Salta, even if you don’t have an eternity of free time to spend there. It’ll be a decision you won’t regret. In fact, most people who plan to spend just a day or two in Salta, decide to extend their trip to Salta so that they can also visit nearby Jujuy and it´s enormous salt flats, Humahuaca Canyon and the traditional village of Purmamarca.

For further information about day trips in Salta, tours to Jujuy, and tailor-made Argentina tours or tours in Patagonia, contact Argentina travel experts, Say Hueque – Tours in Argentina www.sayhueque.com.

Here is a fun video of my Buenos Aires to Mendoza trip.

So much to do, so little time… but Mendoza is a city no one should miss out on when visiting Argentina.

My friends and I started off in Buenos Aires and took an overnight bus along Ruta Nacional 7 to Mendoza. Buses here are comfortable so the 13 hours of travel is not bad at all. Once we arrived at our hostel (Hostel Internacional) we walked around town to check out the scenery, culture, bought a couple bottles of wine and finally arrived at one of the main parks, General San Martín. This park is huge and has a man-made river flowing through it which gives many athletes a place to practice rowing. We walked over a bridge to get to an island in the middle of the river where we sat at a bench, opened our bottle of wine and enjoyed the scenery and rowers rowing by.

Mendoza in early November is hot and dry so it was prime time for outside activities and delicious Argentine ice cream. On our second day, we went and experienced the must-do wine bike tour. Mendoza has thousands of vineyards, a few beer gardens and olive oil factories. With Mr. Hugo’s Bikes, we first rode to an olive oil factory where they had samples of olive oil, chocolate and liquors. Then we went to a beer garden where they had honey beer and other delicious flavors. Finally we arrived to a couple vineyards where we tried white, rosé, and red wines. The day couldn’t have gone better. At night we always made “asados” with the best meat found in the world.

The third day spent in Mendoza was a full day bus tour next to the Andes where we visited Puente del Inca and the national park next to Mt. Aconcagua, the tallest mountain on the Western Hemisphere. We woke up early but it was well worth it. On our way to the park we visited a beautiful lake and then Puente del Inca, which has a natural sulfur arch that forms a bridge over the Mendoza River. After another bus ride we finally arrived to Mt. Aconcagua Provincial Park. This park was beautiful, especially when seeing the reflection of the mountain in a small body of water acting as a mirror.

Finally, the last activity we did was paragliding along the Andes. The 20 minutes I spent flying was incredible and the experience was more affordable than anywhere else in the world. It was a great conclusion to the trip because we were able to see the entire city and more, leaving a memorable view. Once we finished the morning activity, we returned on our bus back to Buenos Aires.

Overall, Mendoza has plenty more activities available so being bored is never possible in this beautiful city. It is definitely a place one should never skip out on when visiting Argentina. For more information about tours in Argentina and Mendoza, visit www.sayhueque.com the Argentina travel experts.

If you’re staying in Buenos Aires and looking to get out of the city for a day, there may be no better option than a day trip in Uruguay.

From Buenos Aires, you can take a boat ride across the Río de la Plata and be in the country of Uruguay in just under an hour. There are also longer 3-hour boat rides available, if you’re not in a hurry and want to enjoy being out on the open water.

The Uruguayan port closest to Buenos Aires is the city of Colonia del Sacramento, usually referred to as simply Colonia. It’s a very small, old and beautiful town, with a particularly lovely Barrio Histórico (historic quarter) that is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Among some of the notable spots within the Barrio Histórico is the Plaza Real de San Carlos, a bullring that once hosted famous bullfighters and thousands of spectators. The bullring’s fantastic architecture makes it worth a visit.

If you choose Colonia as your destination for a day trip in Uruguay, you’ll be surprised at how many museums are located throughout the town’s pleasantly quiet cobblestone streets. The Museum of the Portuguese Historical Period houses artifacts from the late 1600s, when Portugal founded Colonia. The Nacarellero House Museum is an old, almost-perfectly preserved Portuguese house that offers an intimate insight into Colonia’s history.

One of the most well-known sites in Colonia is the Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse. Visitors can climb all the way to the top and admire a phenomenal view of Colonia and the small beaches that surround it. Speaking of the beaches, they’re definitely worth a visit if you’re traveling during the spring or summer months (August-March). Colonia’s beaches are very easy to locate, since the city is so small.

If Colonia sounds a little too low-key for you, consider Montevideo for your day trip in Uruguay. As the capital city of the country, Montevideo boasts a variety of activities and a distinctly cosmopolitan vibe. You can take a 3-hour boat ride directly from Buenos Aires, or connect via bus in Colonia to get to Montevideo.

A countless number of promenades and beaches line Montevideo’s coast, making the Río de la Plata an essential part of the city’s atmosphere. Pocitos Beach is an especially gorgeous beach that attracts hundreds of swimmers, sunbathers, windsurfers and kayakers each season.

Just because Montevideo is such a busy and bustling urban center doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its share of history and culture. Check out the Old City (marked by an enormous old wall that divides it from the modern part of the city) to learn about the origin of Montevideo. Besides fascinating old streets and landmarks, you’ll also find the famous outdoor Port Market here, featuring unique antiques and souvenirs, delicious meats and traditional clothes.

Another hot-spot destination for day trips in Uruguay: the gorgeous and snazzy Punta del Este, located about an hour’s drive away from Montevideo. To get here, you can either take a short 1-hour flight or connect via bus in Montevideo.

Punta del Este is a resort town, famous for its casinos and wide variety of beaches. All of the beaches are beautiful, with clear water and sandy shores; some are on the river and some on the Atlantic Ocean.

As far as which beach to visit, you can really take your pick depending on what kind of beach activities you’re interested in. Brava Beach is popular for its big waves (ideal for surfing) and giant finger structures that “come out” of the sand. Mansa Beach’s calm waters are perfect if you want to swim, sunbathe or fish. Generally speaking, the beaches of Bikini and La Barra tend to be more of party beaches, while the Las Delicias and Pinares beaches are more quiet and relaxing.

If you’ve selected Punta del Este for your day trip in Uruguay, you’ll definitely want to save time to check out the famous Casa-Pueblo, a stunning resort-museum created by Uruguayan artist Paez-Vilaró.

A day trip in Uruguay will leave you feeling personally and culturally enriched,
regardless of which city or cities you decide to visit.

If you’re an adventurer at heart, you’re in the right place.

The Patagonian region that stretches between Argentina and Chile is a gold mine of some of the most impressive mountains, lakes, forests, glaciers and wildlife in the world. In such a large and beautiful region, it’s definitely tough to decide on the best parts of each country and the region as a whole. But if you’re looking for a breakdown of the area, check out the best adventure trips in Argentina, Chile and Patagonia.

Argentina: Hiking at Tierra del Fuego National Park

Love to hike? Then you’ll love hiking in the Land of Fire, also known as Tierra del Fuego, an archipelago at the end of the world. The diverse landscape in the park has been maintained to remain as natural as possible, and the vistas you’ll get of the sea and the Andes Mountains are absolutely pristine. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the eccentric and colorful vegetation thriving in the unique Patagonian Andean forests. If you’re feeling truly courageous on your adventure trip in Argentina, hike up to the Cerro Guanaco Peak. You’ll be amazed at how drastically the temperature will change as you ascend; at the top, do not be surprised if you’re surrounded by snow! Your reward: an astounding view of Argentina and Chile, as well as the historic Beagle Channel. This is Argentina travel at its best!

Chile: Paine Circuit at Torres del Paine National Park

Don’t let the name scare you off. The gorgeous natural landscape you’ll be exploring on this 62-mile hike is more than worth whatever minor pain and exhaustion you experience along the way. Surreal vistas of jagged mountains, impressive glaciers and uniquely beautiful forests help to make this 8 to 10 day long trek the best adventure trip in Chile. Keep your eyes peeled for interesting wildlife, such as the Andean condor and the guanaco. Surely one of the circuit’s most unforgettable sights is that of the Torres del Paine, a set of three majestic granite summits. Note: A shorter, 5-day version of the circuit known as the “W” is available as an option for travelers looking for a slightly less intense version of the best adventure trip in Chile.

Patagonia: Trekking at Los Glaciares National Park

This is a tough one, but after much deliberation, we’ve nominated Los Glaciares National Park as the site for the best adventure trip in Patagonia. The phenomenal mountains and glaciers here are gorgeous from a distance, but the truth is that, like most beautiful things, they’re best appreciated firsthand. Arrange a trek with a professional guide that can lead you on your adventure over Cerro Torre glacier and up Mt. Fitz Roy. You’ll need crampons to stabilize yourself as you meander over the enormous glacier. Another can’t-miss site in the park is Laguna de los Tres, a lovely deep blue lagoon surrounded by an impressive spread of mountains. Although day-long treks and hikes are certainly available, we recommend that you spend as long as you possibly can on the best adventure trip in Patagonia to experience all the different natural wonders the park has to offer. Depending on your level of daring, you can arrange adventure trips that last anywhere from 1 to 10 or more days.

The diverse Patagonian region, with its mountains, glaciers, lakes and wildlife, is a haven for adventurers.

Patagonia is shared between Argentina and Chile, and there is plenty to experience on both sides. But there are three especially remarkable places that are practically required to visit if you are planning an adventure trip in Argentine Patagonia.

#1 Adventure Trip to Perito Moreno Glacier: Los Glaciares National Park

Los Glaciares National Park in the Santa Cruz province of Argentina is home to the largest ice cap in the world outside of Antarctica or Greenland. Thirty percent of the park is covered by ice, meaning it’s advisable to spend at least part of your time in the park on a boat. This way, you can get a great view of the glaciers, specifically the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, which is the highlight of the park for many visitors.

Perito Moreno is enormous: 97 square miles of ice, making it the world’s third largest freshwater supply. You can check out the glacier from a boat, from the designated walking trails, or—if you’re truly looking for an adventure trip in Patagonia—from right on top of it. Make your reservations ahead of time and participate in a guided adventure on top of the glacier itself.
Known as the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia is the capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego province and offers much for adventurers in Patagonia to behold. Ships provide tours of the historical Beagle Channel, which is scattered with islands of fur seals and cormorants galore.

Nearby is the beautiful Tierra del Fuego National Park¸ located on an island that is accessible via bus as well as the End of the World Train. Home to a wide variety of animals, from guanacos to Andean foxes and condors, the park features an absolutely stunning landscape and gorgeous hiking trails that are a dream come true for adventure trip in Patagonia, Argentina.

If you love marine animals and are looking for an adventure in Argentine Patagonia, look no further than Puerto Madryn, located in the Chubut province. The nearby Valdés Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to sea elephants, orcas and southern right whales. A bit further south, in Punta Tombo, dwells South America’s largest colony of Magellan penguins.

Be sure to plan ahead if seeing animals is an important part of your adventure in Argentine Patagonia. Penguin season is from October to April, but the whales venture into the Peninsula to mate and give birth between May and December. So, if you’re hoping to see both, November is an ideal time to visit this part of Patagonia. This is Argentina travel at its best!

If you love the night life, you’ll love Buenos Aires. Here are our favorite spots …

The 3 million population cosmopolitan seaport of Buenos Aires is constantly buzzing with energy. As you’ll surely learn soon after your arrival, this is an energy that doesn’t dissipate at night; on the contrary, during the weekend the bar scene won’t even start heating up until at least 11 pm. And once a night of bar hopping in Buenos Aires gets started, it often won’t stop until dawn.

If it’s your first time bar hopping in Buenos Aires, you’re probably overwhelmed by the vast variety of choices.

Centro

Partying in the Centro of town? Get your night started at La Cigale. It has an impressive drink menu, not to mention live music and an awesome 2 for 1 happy hour that lasts from 6-9 pm every day. You can find it at 25 de Mayo 597, a prime location in the center of the city to kick off a night of bar hopping in Buenos Aires.

When you’re finished at La Cigale, why not continue the faux-French theme at Le Bar? Located at Tucumán 422, this is a huge old house-turned-bar with a lovely terrace that serves lots of delicious, classy drinks. Featuring an eccentric array of live music, Le Bar is the place to be if you’re looking for a laid-back yet slightly sophisticated way to get the night rolling. Note: If you’re looking for a place to party on a weeknight a little bit earlier than usual, check out the 2 for 1 happy hour, between 6-10 pm.

San Telmo

Hip and trendy San Telmo is the perfect place to start off a night of bar hopping in Buenos Aires. The recently-opened Dogtown bar at Bolivar 673 is way bigger inside than it appears from the outside, and even has a pool table that draws in partygoers of all ages until the wee hours of the morning. Happy hour is between 6-11 pm daily.

Who’s your doppelganger? Maybe you’ll find one at Doppelganger, a chic yet classic bar featuring a delectable menu and unique drinks. Check it out at Juan de Garay 500, and don’t forget about the Tues-Fri happy hour that lasts from 7 to 9 pm.

Palermo

We couldn’t possibly write a guide to bar hopping in Buenos Aires and not include Palermo, the number-one party area in the city. No matter where you start off a night in Palermo, you won’t be able to turn around without seeing at least 5 other happenin’ bars. One of our favorites is Mundo Bizarro, located at Serrano 1222. This bar has got it all: creative artwork, delicious cocktails and an overall buena onda (good vibes).

To hear about more bars in Palermo, stay tuned for the next post…or come visit the office near Plaza Serrano for some good advice on the nightlife…and on adventure trips in Argentina. http://www.sayhueque.com/

So excited about your upcoming trip to Argentina and Chile that you totally forgot about packing? We’re here to help.

Firstly, when packing for a trip to Argentina and Chile, you’ve got to consider which season you’ll be arriving in. The seasons in the Southern Hemisphere are reversed from those in the Northern Hemisphere.

Next, figure out exactly which regions you’ll be traveling to when packing for a trip to Argentina and Chile. Check the corresponding weather forecast for each region you’ll be visiting. No matter what, bringing a variety of clothes is a good idea: different regions of each country have extremely distinct temperatures even during the same time of year, and you want to be prepared for anything.

Also, make sure the majority of the clothes you bring are comfortable. You will be traveling, sightseeing, and walking a lot, especially in the major cities like Buenos Aires in Argentina and Santiago in Chile. Bring one dressy outfit in case you attend the theatre or a nice dinner.

Sunglasses are also a must: the sun is very strong down here, and if you don’t have eye protection you will spend a lot of time squinting. Important: Do not forget sunscreen!! Again, the sun is extra-strong, and if you wait to buy sunscreen down here you could end up paying a lot more.

Be sure to remember a plug adapter for your electronics while packing for a trip to Argentina and Chile. Both countries use the ungrounded two-wire type “C” plug with round prongs, popularly known as the europlug. It is the single most widely used plug worldwide, used in almost every country in Europe. We recommend finding one at home and bringing it with you so you don’t have to worry about searching once you get here—though if you decide to wait, you will be able to buy one in Argentina or Chile.

If you do not speak Spanish, bring a pocket Spanish-English dictionary. In fact, even if you do speak Spanish, it’d be a good idea to bring one anyway in case you have any doubts.

If you are planning to stay in any hostels, it’s smart to bring along a towel and a
washcloth. Some hostels do not provide towels without charging extra.

While packing for a trip to Argentina and Chile, think about the safest possible way to carry your valuables when you’re sightseeing and walking around. Women, bring a smaller purse with a longer strap so you can wear it in front of you. Pickpocketing is common. Tip: If you’re walking around an unfamiliar area—or in the subway—with a backpack on, wear it in front of you.

Check and double-check your packing list before taking off, and have an amazing trip!

Travel in South America can be an amazing experience and… there is no country quite like Argentina. With beautiful vineyards, Patagonia´s glaciers, Iguazu Falls and much more, there is plenty to see. However, when traveling, it is important to take some precautions, especially when taking buses from the Retiro Bus Station in downtown Buenos Aires.

Please be extra-careful when you are at Buenos Aires´ Retiro Bus Station as there has been an increase in pickpockets and bags being stolen from travelers.

We recommend the following:
•	Keep a close eye on your belongs and do NOT leave a bag unattended for any reason.
•	If you have a small backpack, wear it in front over your chest to defend against pickpockets.
•	If you have a wallet, keep it in your front pocket.
•	When you are boarding the bus, stay with your luggage until you watch the driver or baggage handler put your suitcase/backpack inside the bus.
• If you buy something at Retiro Bus Station, be prepared. Have small bills ready / easily accessible in your front or shirt pocket so that you can pay without opening a purse or bag.
•	If you use the restroom / bathroom, bring your bags with you. Do not leave them with anyone offering to help watch them.

Ice with that? Cruising from Chile to Argentina on a trip to the world’s end

I like ice with my whisky – especially when the ice in question is a whole South American glacier.

I was nearly at the ‘end of the world’ in Patagonia, but I was toasty-warm, sipping my drink with fellow passengers from the expedition ship Stella Australis. As we floated in the deep fjord, the ice looked like frozen waves on the mountainside.
In the sea, jagged shards of ice drifted like confetti. It was the highlight of our three-day cruise from Punta Arenas in Chile to Ushuaia in Argentina, travelling along the Magellan Strait.

Flat pampas grasslands surround Punta Arenas, interrupted only by the snow-dusted peaks of Tierra del Fuego across the Strait. We visited the town’s hillside cemetery, overlooking the multi-coloured rooftops, where the gravestones told the story of Croatians, Latvians and Spaniards who came to settle here.

At the quayside I joined the Stella Australis, a comfortable new addition to the Chilean cruise line Cruceros Australis.
The passengers were a cosmopolitan mix and we were divided into language groups before enjoying a superb dinner of Chilean wine, steak and Austral hake – fresh from the cool waters we would soon be navigating.
When we awoke, we were enclosed in mist and hugging the dramatic outline of the main island in Tierra del Fuego’s archipelago as we cruised towards Ainsworth Bay. Tierra del Fuego, meaning ‘land of fire’, was originally named by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1520 when he saw wisps from natives’ camp fires.

We took rubber boats to a mussel-strewn beach, elephant seals barking as we sped past them. There we wandered through a Magellanic forest, where cabbage-green mosses grew and golden parasitic plants clung to twisted trees like Christmas decorations.

At Tuckers Islet, penguins popped up from their burrows, waddled along cliffs and huddled together on grey sand watching for predatory skua birds. A quarking colony of cormorants covered a guano-stained rock – we could smell them before we even reached it.

A day into the cruise, sunshine revealed the mountains as we cruised the north-west arm of the Beagle Channel past some of the area’s 1,600 glaciers. We sat in awed silence by the Pia Glacier listening to the thunderclap and firecracker sounds emanating from it as chunks of ice careered into the sea. As we sailed through ‘Glacier Alley’, where each glacier is named after a European nation, we were given country-themed food and drinks.

On our final day, we visited one of the weather-beaten islands near Cape Horn. A hardy navy officer, his family and faithful dog keep watch over the lighthouse, wooden chapel and monument that commemorates sailors who have made it around the notorious Cape. Some 800 ships have been wrecked there – we were about to round the Horn ourselves and our guide joked: ‘Let’s not make it 801.’

It was a calm day, but the swell was growing as we approached the rocky promontory and we clung on, leaving one hand free for the hot grog our thoughtful hosts had brought out on deck. Back in the calm fjords, we anchored near Wulaia Bay, where, on his 1828 voyage, HMS Beagle’s Captain Robert FitzRoy had ‘collected’ four Yaghan natives, exchanging one for a pearl button.
Three survived to became famous in Britain before being returned home on FitzRoy’s second voyage in the 1830s. Darwin, a fellow traveller on that trip, believed the Yaghan were his ‘missing link’.

Cruceros Australis have a 25-year lease on Wulaia Bay and have converted the Thirties naval radio station there into a cultural centre. A farmhouse, abandoned by a Croatian family in the Fifties, sits near the shoreline where wild pigs have unearthed evidence of an early Yaghan settlement.

We disembarked at Ushuaia, the world’s most southerly city and gateway to Antarctica. With the Martial Mountains as a backdrop, the end of the world was breathtakingly beautiful – especially when accompanied by one last slug of whisky.

Travel Facts
Cruceros Australis offers three and four-day cruises between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. They run between September and April aboard two vessels, Via Australis, with a capacity of 136, and Stella Australis, with 210.
Cruises are all-inclusive and feature daily inland tours to see glaciers, trek through forests and observe wildlife.
