The Most Beautiful Hike in Patagonia

0 Comments 07 November 2011

There are many magnificent hiking opportunities in the Patagonia region.

And with so many Patagonia tours to choose from, it makes sense to consider what you are looking for on  your hike.  That is, do you want to see spectacular glaciers and rugged mountains without the high altitude fatigue?

I for one, love Patagonia because it offers world class mountain scenery, uncrowded trails, without the headaches and lung aches of Peru´s famous Inca Trail.  And one of Patagonia´s most beautiful trails of all can be found on Mount Fitz Roy in El Chaltén: the trail leading to the famous Laguna de los Tres.

The eerie glacial structure known as Laguna de los Tres can only be accessed via a four-hour hike, so it definitely requires setting a whole day aside for the journey. In fact, many hikers decide that the trail is too beautiful to leave right away, and set up camp at one of the many backcountry campsites on the mountain. But whether you spend a day or a week, the trip is well worth it.

Along the trail, you’ll encounter lush beech forests and sparkling mini-lakes, as well as mysterious bogs that could serve as the setting for a fantastical fairy tale. But nothing will prepare you for what greets you at the end of the trail: the unforgettable sight of Laguna de los Tres.  Check out our photo album of this hike in Patagonia.

Tall mountains stretch out in the distance, behind the icy laguna (lagoon). Hikers who are lucky enough to watch the sun set on Laguna de los Tres report that the sun’s reflections on the water create a uniquely alluring shade of deep green.

Even the most impatient type of “let’s-pick-up-and-go” hikers will linger to absorb the full beauty of this isolated location. The spectrum of color and geography that sprawls out in front of the rocky beach at Laguna de los Tres is simply irresistible. When you see it for yourself, you won’t question why it’s considered by many the most beautiful hike in Patagonia.
