| DESTINATION GUIDE CHILE |
Chile is a narrow but enormous long strip of land that goes from Peru in the north to the Magellan’s Strait in the south, between the Pacific Ocean on the West and the Andes Range on the East. If anyone tells that the widest point of land in Chile is of just 430km (265 miles), one may think of the reason to visit a country with such a small area to travel, but Chile was amazingly blessed with wonderful sceneries and treasures to discover: the driest desert in the world in the north full of culture, endless beaches along the Pacific Ocean, dozens of volcanoes spread over the entire country on the Andes side, colored lakes and trekking spots in any of the many National Parks, most of then almost virgin, a singular fjords area only to be compared to Scandinavia, and a central valley where some of the most awarded wines in the world can be found.
Patagonia lodges many of the best areas in Chile, which includes the Lake District, the Chilean Southern Road and the trekkers “Mecca”: Torres del Paine.
The north of Chile, part of what we call the Altos Andes area, are home of unique destinations as San Pedro de Atacama, where a perfect combination of geysers, volcanoes, multi-colored mountains, infinite deserts, salt flats and the tradition of ancient cultures will amaze any travelers.
And if you are still looking for remote regions, we invite you to think of Easter Island or Robinson Crusoe Island, exclusive pieces of land on the Pacific Ocean and still less visited than other destinations. |

The official Chilean currency is the peso in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 and 20,000. Available coins are 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 pesos. The current exchange rate varies, by the end of 2006 it was:
1 US Dollar = 518 Chilean Pesos
1 Euro = 611 Chilean Pesos

1 AU Dollar = 383 Chilean Pesos
We highly recommend using pesos while traveling in Chile, especially when visiting National parks or remote areas as not other currency is accepted there. Several exchange houses can be found in Santiago de Chile and other tourist cities in the country, try to avoid exchanging money to people on the street. ATM’s are easy to access in urban areas. American Express, Visa and Master Card are widely accepted throughout Chile. |

The easiest way to travel around Chile is by air, mainly through Lan, the airline that connects the important cities in the country.
Bus is the preferred way of transportation for independent travelers not rushing, for routes demanding less than 24 hours in Central and North Chile. Buses are comfortable, safe, clean and efficient. There’s a main bus station in each city from where buses leave or arrive and only authorized companies are available to operate.
Traveling by ferry is another option in Chile, you can discover the fjords’ area going from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales on board the Navimag. Mare Australis is another great option to get from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia, in Argentina.
If you choose hiring a car, we highly recommend driving the Lake District. |
