DESTINATION GUIDE IBERA MARSHLANDS
Bariloche

The Ibera inlets are with good reason both one of the most popular wildlife refuges to visit, and an incredibly important natural resource to central South America. Located in the Argentine Mesopotamia, they are between the Rio Paraná, and the Rio Uruguay. Their area is roughly 5,020 square miles, consisting of approximately 2702 square miles of swamp land, 193 square miles of marshy land, and 115 square miles of lagoons, all of which is designated as a protected wildlife area. The region receives roughly 60 inches of rainfall a year, and retains as much as 75% of it, having only one outlet to drain to the ocean. It is resultantly an area of amazing species diversity, sporting some 350 species of birds, as well as four animals unique to its particular environment, the mained wolf, the neo tropical otter, the marsh deer, and the pampas deer.

Weather

The weather in Corrientes province, where the Ibera reserve is located, is surprisingly mild, making it feasible to visit year round. During the wintertime, the temperature rarely dips below 16 C, and in the summer, it seldom rises above 27 C. There is no real wet season, as there is fairly steady rainfall throughout the year, but during the winter months, it rains a couple of inches less per month than it does during the spring and summer. A stay of a few days will however insure that you are given the opportunity to explore the marshes without the nuisance of rain.

When to come?

The best season to visit Ibera is on the months between March and October.

How long?

We recommend spending at least two nights of accommodation in the area, keep in mind the time you will spend to get there.

How to get there?

The reserve has two airports in close proximity, one in Corrientes, and one in Misiones (Posadas), both of which have flights to Buenos Aires. It can also be reached by long distance bus and rental car, which includes a scenic trip through the Argentine countryside, which, depending on your city of origin, would best be traveled in a 4x4 due to dirt roads and subsequent mud.
