Day 4 - El Calafate Tours: Perito Moreno Glacier

In the morning, we’ll take you to Glaciers National Park to take the 6 hour-long Perito Moreno Glacier tour. Get prepared to play with the giants!

Glaciers National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981 and home to 200 approximately glaciers. Half of this park is occupied by the campo de hielo patagónico (Patagonian ice field), the largest ice field after Antarctica.

You will travel 40 km (about 25 miles) from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park you will take the walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and you’ll feel really close to the Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall to sink forever into the lake.

During about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you might want to know…and things you might have never thought about. After this visit you will take a boat ride that will take you close enough to fully appreciate the 80 meter (262 feet) high ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece.

Day 5 - From El Calafate to Puerto Natales

In the morning, you’ll make your way to the bus station to start your trip to Puerto Natales—Your Chilean journey is about to begin!

Things to take into account:  it’s important to be there half hour before the departure. Most hotels are walking distance from the bus terminal, but if you prefer to take a taxi, roughly you might spend usd 5/7. It is not allowed to take any fresh food, plants, seeds, etc. from Argentina to Chile. They are very strict, and fines can be high. If you are not sure if something is allowed or not, please declare it (they will provide you with a form) and they will inform you if you can carry it or not.

After this 5 hour-long trip, you will cross hundreds of kilometres of green landscapes dramatically situated between the mountains. Once you arrive to Puerto Natales the guardian Milodon -the last ground sloth that walked the Earth 5000 years ago- will wave its bronze hand at the entrance of this picturesque town. You’ll make your way to your hotel (most are few blocks away from the bus station) and have time to explore this small town, the base to visit the world famous Torres del Paine National Park.

How to enjoy your first afternoon at Puerto Natales? You can walk along the shores of Magellan Strait, or just relax in one of the little cafés in town while admiring its patchworked facade of colorful houses.

At Torres del Paine National Park there are no shops, so Puerto Natales will be your last chance to buy provisions for the next day. Shops don’t provide plastic bags so you’ll have to bring your own ecological bag or make some space in your hiking one.

Day 6 – Discovering Torres del Paine National Park

Today we’ll pick you up really early at your hotel to take you to the first stop of this 10 hour-long adventurous trip: Milodon Cave. This natural monument, located 24 kilometers north of town, is composed by three caverns and a rocky conglomerate called Silla del Diablo (Devil’s chair), due its chairlike shape.

Before getting to the cave, we will pass by La Silla del Diablo and learn about its mysterious legend…a story told by the oldest man in Patagonia who believed that the Devil appeared to those who came to look for him on the dark nights.

We’ll keep on travelling to Torres del Paine National Park, and on the way you’ll get to see Sofia Lagoon, Prat Range, Porteño Lake, and the stunning Grey Lake viewpoint. You’ll go over Serrano Bridge to continue to Grey Lake sector, where you’ll have time to walk along the shore. Once you go back to the parking lot, we’ll take you to a restaurant to rest and have lunch (not included in our service).

After lunch, we’ll head to Salto Grande sector. You’ll visit Nordenskjold Lake view point before continuing by a sinuous route to Amarga Lagoon area. Previously, we’ll make a stop at Paine turquoise waterfall which waters come directly from Paine River.

Heading back to Puerto Natales, we’ll stop at Sarmiento Lake viewpoint to take the last picture of the stunning Torres del Paine.

Day 7 – Free day at Puerto Natales

This is your opportunity to discover other natural monuments of Puerto Natales. Take a walk at the shores of Last Hope Sound and explore by foot the little and picturesque town by your own.

Our favorite is Balmaceda and Serrano Navigation, where you’ll sail the fjords like the first pioneers of Patagonia and discover the natural wonders of the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. This is a full day trip to be in contact with nature and one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes of Chilean Patagonia.

Day 8 - From Puerto Natales to El Calafate

Today get prepared to take your bus back to  El Calafate. To get to the bus station a taxis will cost you 6/8 dollars, roughly. We highly recommend being ready half hour before the departure time at the bus terminal.

Once you arrive to the bus station at El Calafate you will make your way to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the evening taking a local brew at downtown accompanied by a delicious Patagonian lamb stew. Calafate ice-cream or a golden-caramel flan con dulce de leche will be your apt choice for dessert.

Thank you so much for this unforgettable experience!

We cannot thank you and everyone at Say Hueque enough for the fantastic experience we had in Argentina. We will (and already have) recommended you to any of our friends looking to travel to Argentina, and Patagonia in particular. All we had to do was pack and show up! It was so easy, and so much fun. The one thing that maybe would have been helpful was if the prices for taxis/park entrances/food allowances etc. were listed in the itinerary in the local currency instead of USD, but this wasn't a big problem. There was something we loved about every hotel that we stayed at, but I think my favourite was the Cauquenes de Nimez in El Calafate... The afternoon tea, the wonderful staff, and the proximity to the wildlife reserve were the icing on the cake for this already charming and cozy place.

Attached is a picture of us at the Laguna de Los Tres... We were so lucky to have such fantastic conditions!

Again, thank you so much for this unforgettable experience... we absolutely cannot wait to visit again.

Cheers,

Shannon & Supreeti

Thanks again to Say Hueque and especially to you & Lucia and all the other people who helped me have a wonderful holiday.

Hello Marcela
How are you ? I hope you are fine. Apologies for the long delay in responding. I had to go back to work the day after getting home from South America and then two friends from London arrived to stay with me for two weeks so I've been busy looking after them.

I heard about Say Hueque, from searching the internet for local travel agents in South America.
I like to use local businesses when i travel. That way i know i'm contributing to the economy and the locals like to present their country the best way possible.

My favourite destination was El Calafate. I loved the little town. My hotel was upgraded and the excursions to Perito Moreno and Torres Del Paine day trips were excellent.

My favourite hotel was Mirador Del Lago in El Calafate & Don Tomas in Atacama were both very good and hard to choose which one was better out of the two. Very good service at both hotels. The meals in the restaurants were delicious. The facilities and location was also very good and suited my needs

About the excrsion, it is hard to choose between Perito Moreno & Iguasu day trips. Both were excellent. But the organisation in El Calafate was probably the better out of the two.

Guides, They were all pretty good.

I think the full day trip to Argentine side of Iguasu is a bit too much if people are not doing the boat rides. There should be an option to do a half day trip without the boat ride. Because only 2 people in the group did the boat ride and the rest of us just sat around. People can spend the time to look at other waterfalls in the area but after a whole day of walking around it's very tiring for some people.

Thanks again to Say Hueque and especially to you & Lucia and all the other people who helped me have a wonderful holiday.
Regards
Catherine

I really enjoyed the hiking at El Chalten and the one day that I hiked to Mt Fitz Roy was the highlight for me!

Hi Marcela,

I will certainly go into Trip Advisor and post a positive review of my experience on my trip.

I identified Say Hueque from an internet search for Patagonia Tours. I then read some of the positive ratings from other travelers. I decided to book through Say Hueque because of a) positive reviews from other travellers; b) the itinerary that you offered suited what I wanted; and c) I liked the idea of being reasonably independent and not having too much organised or being part of a week long tour.

There were probably a number of highlights. In terms of the actual arrangements, the ease of having most of my travel and hotel bookings completed without having to concern myself with them was a highlight. In terms of the actual trip, I really enjoyed the hiking at El Chalten and the one day that I hiked to Mt Fitz Roy was the highlight for me.
The hotel in El Calafate (Kau Yatun) was the best one of the trip. Very comfortable, good service, good restaurant and nice location.

As mentioned above, it was not an excursion, but the hiking in El Chalten was my favourite. However, at El Calafate, I booked an additional excursion to Estancia Christina on my one free day, and that excursion was great. The guides were all good. I think the guide from El Calafate who did the Perito Moreno glacier tour - I think her name was Danielle - was great, very friendly, helpful and professional.

Maybe the only thing that I could suggest as a possible improvement is offering an option to do a trip without the visit to Puerto Natales in Chile. It's a long trip there and back, and the one day I had in the Torres del Paine national park wasn't really enough and the weather was bad. I would either like to have had a few days to do some hiking there, or spent a little longer at each of El Calafate and El Chalten and skipped Puerto Natales.

Kind regards
Peter
