BUENOS AIRES, CALAFATE & BARILOCHE – 9 Days

Tour Perito Moreno Glacier, enchanting Bariloche Lake District & more

On this 9-day trip to Argentina, you’ll discover two of the most incredible destinations in Patagonia: El Calafate and Bariloche. El Calafate is world-famous for being the gateway to the Argentine glaciers, specifically the imposing Perito Moreno, the only glacier on earth that is still advancing. Wander through the crystal lakes and magic woods of Bariloche, better known as the “Lake District” of Patagonia, and taste the best chocolates in Argentina. But, of course, this trip won’t be complete without a visit to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, where culture, dance, and history merge within its cobblestone streets.

Day 1 – Travel to Argentina, First Stop: Buenos Aires

Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to the city and you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy Buenos Aires at your own pace. Buenos Aires is a marvelous, energetic, cosmopolitan city, full of color and different styles of architecture.

The capital of Argentina, and described as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires proudly embraces its title, and also shows off plenty of its own culture! Argentinians are usually eager to host visitors; if you walk the streets with a map, someone will surely stop and ask if you need directions… that’s just our spirit!

So, for this first day, feel free to wander the cobblestone streets lined with outdoor cafes, enjoy the mouthwatering aroma of world-famous Argentine beef sizzling on an open parrilla (barbeque), and browse the local antique and artisan markets that offer plenty of bargain shopping.

Day 2 – Buenos Aires City Tour & Tango Show

In the morning we’ll pick you up to enjoy our 5-hour Buenos Aires city tour—you will be swept away by the highlights of our beloved Buenos Aires. Over the course of a half-day you will have the chance to visit the historical and political center of the city; Plaza de Mayo and the Pink House (the presidential house).

Next, we’ll move on to San Telmo, with its cobblestone streets and the oldest residential neighborhood, and then to La Boca where Buenos Aires turns colorful and tango is ever-present. Come walk Caminito street and dance with the locals. The next stop is the chic and aristocratic Recoleta, where the big palaces remind us why Buenos Aires is called the “Paris of the South”.

In the evening we’ll pick you up from your hotel to take you to a mystical place where you’ll discover one of our most ancient traditions. Tango is more than our national dance… tango is our immigrant origins, the talent of our local artists, the sensuality of Argentine women and our way to deal with a broken heart; dancing our way through tragic, and yet eternal, love stories.

Tonight you will enjoy a 3-hour professional display of tango and music with a group of local artists onstage immersed in an elegant and alluring place. The manners, ambience, clothes and dance steps which tango-lovers used to practice 100 years ago will come to life again and you will travel back in time for a night.

This spectacular demonstration of the finest local dancing will be accompanied by delicious Argentine and international cuisine. Dinner is all-inclusive, beverages included so you can lose yourself in the ethereal taste of Malbec wine. At the end of the evening, around midnight, you will be driven back to your hotel, fully in love with the bohemian spirit of our beloved Buenos Aires.

Day 3 – From Buenos Aires, Travel to Patagonia: El Calafate

Today we’ll take you from your hotel in Buenos Aire to the airport, to fly to El Calafate, the perfect place for adventure travelers who want to unearth the most spellbinding natural wonders in Patagonia, like Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the only glaciers on earth that’s still advancing. Upon arrival, you will be taken to your hotel, where you will have the rest of the day to relax or explore your new surroundings.

For many years now, El Calafate has been considered the capital of glaciers. But… is El Calafate only about the glaciers? Well, yes and no… glaciers are the main attractions that you can visit via hiking or a boat ride, but El Calafate offers a lot more to discover about Argentine rural culture. From Calafate, you can take any of our Patagonia day tours to visit a typical finca (ranch) and learn about the gaucho (cowboy) culture.

Say Hueque Tips

Take a look at our Calafate Travel Guide to find more practical information about the city. Our advice: if you feel like exploring a bit on your own today, you can visit Laguna Nimez, a nearby natural reserve where pink flamingos – and many other native species – roam freely!

Day 4 – El Calafate: Perito Moreno Glacier Tour

In the morning, we’ll drive you to Glaciers National Park to begin your 6-hour Perito Moreno Glacier tour. Get prepared to play with the giants!

Glaciers National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 and is home to approximately 200 glaciers. Half of this park is occupied by the Campo de Hielo Patagónico (Patagonian ice field), the largest ice field in the world, after Antarctica.

You will travel about 25 miles from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park, you will take walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and you’ll feel unbelievably close to Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall, sinking forever into the lake below.

Over the course of about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you might want to know…and things you may have never thought about. After this visit, you will take a boat ride that will bring you close enough to fully appreciate the 262-foot ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece.

Say Hueque Tips

Have you ever imagined walking across the surface of a glacier? Well, this is your chance! Take a look at the Mini Trekking tour, which allows you to trek on Perito Moreno Glacier… This is one of our favorite Patagonia outings; we’re sure you won’t regret it.

Day 6 – Bariloche Tours: History and Nature

This morning, we’ll pick you up at your hotel to start one of the most famous and traditional visits to the Lake District. For around 6 hours you will tour the area in an active way, and your guide will be constantly focused on sharing the vast history of the area and the most relevant facts about the natural heritage of Bariloche.

You will visit Campanario Hill, considered by National Geographic to be the 8th-best view in the world, and one of the most visited places here—1500 people go to enjoy the view every day. Other fabled places you will visit include Nahuel Huapi and the mild waters of Moreno Lake, Lopez and Capilla mountains, and the world renowned Llao-Llao Hotel. A short 5-minute sail later, you will finally arrive at Puerto Blest, one of the heavenly ports of Nahuel Huapi Lake, a secluded place that has amazed travelers from all over the world with its beautiful vegetation – one of the most varied in Bariloche – and the relaxed atmosphere created by the mountains and the surrounding Valdivian Forest.

From there, you’ll be able to tour the bay, eat your boxed lunch and walk the shores of Lake Frías to see its peculiar green waters, which help to form the natural border between Argentina and Chile. At the end of this full-day experience, we’ll drive you back to Bariloche.

The trip exceeded my expectations!

We did a lot of online research and found your Agency had good reviews (Trip Advisor); we liked the flexibility you offered, small groups and opportunity to personalize our experience with more activity (walks, hikes, etc.)

Diane was very responsive. My only complaint was that sometimes the information went only to my traveling companion, Joan Donhauser, and not to me too (and she didn’t realize that I didn’t get it too). When there are several couples traveling together, each couple should receive any notices.

The hotels were all good. We did become frustrated with Quixote over time because they didn’t provide us with queen beds (gave us twins) and the Donhausers on our last night in Calafarte had a terrible room. Since we made our reservations so far in advance, I don’t think that should have happened. We did like this hotels location; we could walk to everything. The Bariloche hotel (5 star) was terrific; great location and services.

We really enjoyed Bariloche – such a beautiful place! And our guide (Lorena?) was excellent; we had a great day with her (and only one other couple from Puerto Rico), even though we couldn’t hike in the forests due to the wind, she showed many beautiful places. The brewery visit with snacks and tastings was very fun.

We also loved El Chartan – such a unique place and we enjoyed hiking locally – there were lots of opportunities for short hikes too. Our adorable B & B was terrific; the hostess was so accommodating, the breakfasts were delicious, and it was a great location too.

Regarding guides, as I said Lorena was great. We also loved our tour of Buenos Aires with Tina; Buenos Aires is such a beautiful and large city with so many parks and memorable places (the mausoleum, La Boca, Teatro Colon, etc). I appreciated that the tour buses were always on time (or early) and the drivers were accommodating. Thanks also for getting us to the departing airport on time and sharing with us your perspective on all things Argentinian.

The trip exceeded my expectations!

Thank you!

The trip went very smoothly, everything was on time, the tours were all very professional and great quality

Hi Cecilia,
YES, we loved the trip. It was wonderful.

The journey home was very long but uneventful. It's always nice to be home but we have very fond memories of Argentina. It's a bit of a shock to be back to winter and the short days.

To answer your questions

Why Say Hueque.
We normally travel independently and make our own bookings. Since this was our first time to Argentina, and also our first time to anywhere in South America we were unsure of what to expect. We had looked at some of the package tours and found they didn't really go to all the places we wanted to go to and also we didn't want to be in a "group" all the time. After some research and reading reviews using Say Hueque seemed like a good option and it worked out really well. It was the perfect balance of being able to do what we wanted but not having to deal with booking everything ourselves.

The booking process.
Lucia made the process very easy, we told her what we wanted, she made a few changes and suggestions to improve our plans and it was done very quickly. Everything went according to plan, even the internal flights were on time!!! It made for a very stress free vacation. The detailed daily itinerary is a great idea. All of the information was package was very well put together.

Favorite Hotel All the accommodation was fine but the Peninsula Petit was our favorite. The location was spectacular, food was great and Pablo and Samanta were lovely and excellent hosts. We wish we could have stayed longer.
Least Favorite The St George in Iguazu. The rooms were a little dated but the location was very convenient to some great restaurants and overall the hotel was fine.

Our favorite excursion The kayak trip with Julian on Lake Mascardi was our favorite. We had perfect conditions and Julian was an excellent guide. The delicious lunch by the lake looking over at the glacier was a special moment.
Guides All the guides and drivers were excellent. The wine & treats and introduction to Buenos Aires from you, Cecilia, were the perfect start to the vacation. Jeremias and Alberto gave us a great tour of the city the next day and it gave us a good idea of where to go when we returned to Buenos Aires at the end of our vacation. All the other tours were really good, the drivers and guides very knowledgeable, helpful and spoke very good English.

The trip went very smoothly, everything was on time, the tours were all very professional and great quality. It was also nice to have you check in on us every so often and make sure we were ok. It was comforting to know that we had back up if something went wrong, which can happen to even the best plans. Luckily everything went well and this will be a vacation we will remember for a long time. We will certainly recommend Say Hueque and Argentina to our friends
Thank you for everything.

All the best

Tom & Ann

We are back home and thanks to Say Hueque we had a great trip!

Long journeys always throw up 'lemons' (sour experiences), but Say Hueque makes them into lemonade... To be serious vacation time is so precious its worth getting local help to smooth the way and Say Hueque have this off to an art. The driver who took us to the Tango club was the perfect host, and yet this was just one of many transfers. Say Hueque guides and drivers are great - Select travel not so much. But to be fair they kept us safe and tried to be helpful, and we did get to the airport on time.

Favourite hotel has to be 'Soho' in Buenos Aires - excellent because the girls are so thoughtful (they even had spare SUBE cards on offer). The location is also very elegant, and we wish we had stayed there longer.

Worst hotel was La Cantera in Iguazu. Why? Well the rooms were indeed clean and well appointed, the restaurant was also very good and the staff very nice but -but- but.... We have travelled across the world to many countries and many hotels yet the front desk of La Cantera is the worst we have encountered - to the extent that we would never stay there again.

Best excursion? The Sunset Kayak trip displays the magic of Bariloche perfectly.

We enjoy Argentina and are looking forward to returning. I need to learn more Spanish!
