BUENOS AIRES, PUERTO MADRYN, CALAFATE & BARILOCHE – 12 Days

Tour Perito Moreno Glacier, go whale watching in Puerto Madryn & more

Featuring a Valdes Peninsula whale watching cruise and a visit to South America’s largest Magellanic Penguin colony, this trip also explores Argentina’s most seductive cities, Buenos Aires and Bariloche, as well as the majestic Perito Moreno Glacier.

Day 1 – Travel to Argentina, first stop Buenos Aires

Welcome to Buenos Aires! Upon arrival to the city, you will be met at the airport by our driver and transferred to your hotel.

The capital of Argentina, also known as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires proudly embraces this title with a rich heritage and different cultures. Explore buildings reminiscent of traditional European architecture, walk down the cobbled streets lined with rustic outdoor cafes, visit the local antiques and artisan markets that offer plenty of bargain shopping and taste the mouthwatering barbecue prepared with prized Argentine beef let to sizzle on an open parrilla.

Buenos Aires is also home to some excellent local designers and you will certainly find the perfect leather jacket, long leather boots and handbags for all occasions. Above all, Buenos Aires is known as the home of tango. Be sure to enjoy a traditional tango show accompanied by dinner and explore the colorful San Telmo and Recoleta neighborhoods.

You will have the rest of the day to enjoy this vibrant city, leaving you the remainder of the day to explore the historic neighborhoods and enjoy the cafe culture of Buenos Aires.

Day 2 – Buenos Aires City Tour & Tango Show

You will be picked up from your hotel In the morning for the city tour. Over the course of a half-day tour, you will have the chance to visit San Telmo, the historical and political centre of the city known for La Boca, a historic neighbourhood with a strong European flavour. This is the part of the city where Buenos Aires turns colourful and tango is ever present. Also take a trip to the aristocratic neighbourhood of Recoleta, where the big palaces remind us that Buenos Aires was once the Paris of the South. Duration: 4-5 hours.

In the evening, you will be picked up from your hotel to be driven to one of Buenos Aires’ most emblematic cultural highlights: a dinner and tango show offering the spectacular demonstration of the finest local dancing accompanied by delicious Argentine cuisine and all the malbec you like. At the end of the evening you will be driven back to your hotel. Total duration: (dinner +show) 4 hours.

Day 4 – Peninsula Valdes Whale Watching

After breakfast you will be led on a full day tour of the Valdes Peninsula (shared service). To enter this UNESCO World Heritage site, you will cross an incredibly narrow strip of land with sea on both sides. Further along you will arrive at Caleta Valdes, a large natural creek that is home to a colony of sea elephants. After admiring Caleta Valdes you’ll continue along the road as it drops suddenly down into a crescent of golden cliffs overlooking a bright blue bay and the small village of Puerto Piramides. Here herds of southern right whales tend to arrive in June.

You will take a boat trip around the Golfo Nuevo bay and watch these immense creatures gliding past. The peninsula navigation allows you to get unusually close to the whales. You will even get wet if they jump!

Day 5 – Puerto Madryn Tours: Penguins in Punta Tombo

Today you will leave Puerto Madryn and drive 120km south to visit the largest colony of Magellan penguins in South America.

The colony’s population reaches over half a million birds during the peak season, and the best time to visit is between October and April. One of the greatest features of this reserve is the fact that you can literally walk among the penguins and observe their habits.

You’ll have the opportunity to see how they feed their babies, defend their territory, build their nests, and of course watch their characteristic comedic waddle in and out of the sea. You will then return to your hotel in Puerto Madryn just in time to enjoy the sunset.

Welcome to Southern Patagonia!

El Calafate is located in the Patagonian steppe, dry and dramatic.
It is on the border of Lago Argentino (Argentina’s biggest lake), considered capital of the glaciers. It is the gate to visit world wide known Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the only glaciers in the world that is still advancing.

Upon arrival you will be taken to the hotel and have the rest of the day to relax or explore the areas around the town or if possible, make the 1km hike out to Laguna Nimez for a beautiful Patagonian sunset.

We had an excellent trip. Thanks to Say Hueque, which we will recommend to any friends planning to visit Argentina.

Dear Juan,

David Rosen suggested to work with your company and we followed his advice. We had an excellent trip with mostly nice hotels (Exception the one in Puerto Madryn, which due to its far off location we did not like ..)

Clearly the former Governors house in Molinos was our favorite hotel … elegant, central, relaxing, nice restaurant

Juan in B.A. was a great guide!

The best excursion was to Colomé. The James Turrell Museum is spectacular and You should visit it Yourself and recommend it to Your clients.

Two things to improve:
1. if prior to a trip one communicates for weeks with one Yuna or anybody specific at Say Hueque, I would consider it polite, if Yuna or any given contact with Your tourists would show up at the beginning of the trip, if only to say hello and make sure Your guests are comfortable and introduce their fellow colleagues who then would do the guiding etc. This is not to criticize Yuna or Say Hueque for not giving its best to organize flights etc to near perfection. It is just a suggestion for a more personal handling of Your guests, after all one is on a first name basis and may have had long e-mail exchanges for weeks before....

Puerto Madryn may be nice for people who know their way around there, but for Your guests it is just the point of embarkation to visit the Valdez Peninsula or the Penguins down South. Make sure not offer a program, where guests are given a „free day“ in that city i.e. where they are left „stranded“. There is really not so much to do outside the just mentioned activities. Luckily and with Yuna's help we were able to avoid just such a situation at the end of our trip.

But all in all we were very happy and satisfied with our trip, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to Say Hueque, which we will recommend to any friends planning to visit Argentina.

Sincerely Andreas Nidecker, Irma Laukkanen

We had SUCH an amazing honeymoon thanks to you guys..we appreciate every last detail from the prompt pickups to the late check out at some point, and the kindness everyone on your team has showed us.

Hola Rodrigo!

We had SUCH an amazing honeymoon thanks to you guys..we appreciate every last detail from the prompt pickups to the late check out at some point, and the kindness everyone on your team has showed us.

After doing a lot of research on which spots of Argentina we wanted to check out, I believe I checked out at least 3 companies via Google trying to find a company that could accommodate our itinerary with a reasonable budget. We almost went to another company, but I think your prompt replies in the inquiry phase really helped us lean your way.

It was nice to have you guys arrange all the interconnecting flights and hotels for us, and we felt like we were in good hands throughout the entire trip. The recommendation pamphlets you provided were helpful, and the tours were just amazing. We definitely appreciated the on-time pick ups and friendly service throughout the entire booking process and while we were in country everything went real smooth and we felt comfortable.

The hotel in Bariloche (Inacayal) might have been our favorite. It was a beautiful property, had super nice staff, beautiful room, nice pool/hot tub with a spectacular view and overall great location overlooking Nahel Haupi lake.
Kau Yatun in El Calafate was also nice!!! No TV but that was fine by us since we enjoyed the quite. It felt so remote and also had happy, friendly staff - they even offered bikes into town which was a nice surprise (only used them once though) and it had a peaceful stream nearby you could walk to and walking into town wasn't hard.
The Lunajuim in El Chalten was also fantastic because the lady at the front desk was a doll! The hotel itself was ina decent location and had a nice breakfast - the rooms were OK, but the service by everyone really stole the show as they really made us feel at home..
The Aldea Lodge was also a cool hotel being in the jungle, saw neat animals and the pool was beautiful. The room was also neat with the wooden floors and remoteness, comfy beds and TV was nice to fall asleep to. The staff was nice, but not as friendly as the people from Patagonia, but still nice.
I know you asked for our favorite, but they were all so unique and awesome in their own ways!!! Sorry!! =)

Man..we were just BLOWN away by the glacier tour..the guides were cool, and the glacier was just mesmerizing! Was so cool putting on the crampons and walking on that gigantic chunk of ice - one of the coolest places we have ever and probably will ever see...All excursions were worth it to us and we enjoyed each of them, but this one took the cake

Santi (Santiago) in Bariloche was just fantastic for our Nature & History tour. He spoke excellent English, was funny, and polite and just a wonderful guy! Rodrigo was also super nice and informative for our welcome and departure - he even checked up on us during the trip which was nice!

The only thing we can suggest is perhaps sending the itinerary descriptions in an easier format to read (during booking process) - not sure how you'd do that, but I think it would possibly help.

Also, perhaps give those traveling to the Patagonia region a heads up that they'll need to throw their toilet paper in the bin and not flush it as it was a little confusing when we first encountered that.

For Buenos Aires/Bariloche, maybe give people a heads up that they will probably have to insert their room key next to the light switch to activate electricity for the room. They will eventually ask the front desk and be advised, but when you first arrive and think your room lights don't work and need to use a dark bathroom in a hurry, it would be good to know ;)

Also would be good to know how much to tip guides. We had no idea what was appropriate, so any kind of advice for that would be very helpful. I think we read somewhere it should be a certain percent of the cost of the excursion, but since we're on a package and don't know all the costs, a general idea would definitely help.

Other than that, you guys are just awesome. So nice and helpful the whole way through. We were worried about booking a company we have never heard of before, but after reading a few reviews and confirming you were legit, it was an easy choice. Thank you over and over again for such a wonderful honeymoon and experience. We want to visit more areas of Argentina someday like the Pininsula Valdes y Ushauia..so we'll be back (hopefully!!)

Best regards,
Erika & Jaimeson

All in all it was a great trip filled with some good memories...

Hola Patty,
Thanks so much for your email and again thanks for coming and picking us up in San Antonio de Areco...above and beyond and appreciated! Our flight back went smoothly and it was good to be back home after 30 days on the road.
We just finished an album of our Patagonia trip and Paul has been telling everyone of our experiences. All in all it was a great trip filled with some good memories...
To answer some of your question...
Favorite hotel...Lirolay Suites in Bariloche
Los Sauces in El Calafate

Excursion has to be with Federico Kawen Adventures, kayak trip to Lago Mascardi

Best of traveling with Say Hueque: Timely transfers, and knowledgeable guides like yourself!

Improvements: Better communication, reply promptly to emails. Make sure you check out quality of hotels prior to letting someone book. In our case we chose the superior lodging and got a 3 star hosteria in El Chalten..
Make sure that independent travelers do not get put in an excursion package that is overcrowded and impersonal...otherwise we would have chosen a tour group instead of traveling on our own. The Christiana Upsala Glacier tour was an example of being overcrowded. The Fitz Roy Expeditions in El Chalten is an example of offering personal experiences without a "full bus". Had a great kayak experience with them. Their eco-lodge is wonderful.
Thanks Patty for your recipe and keep in touch.

With Kind Regards,
Alice & Paul Arthur
