DISCOVER TORRES DEL PAINE – 5 Days

Hike, bike and/or navigate in Torres del Paine National Park

Stay for 5 days at a hidden campsite inside Torres del Paine National Park and sleep in a dome tent, made to resemble the dwellings of nomadic natives called the Kawescars. Wake up to the sound of little birds each morning and stargaze at night from the comfort of your own bed through the windows of your dome. You’ll camp near the famous Torres del Paine mountains, which will be an excellent location to hike, horseback ride or sail to explore secluded corners of the National Park. At night, enjoy a delicious meal within the big community domes, where you can meet other travelers, enjoy acoustic guitar and sip the best Patagonian drinks.

Day 1 - The Patagonian Adventure Starts…

Start your 5-day trip to Torres del Paine National Park with a pickup from any of these destinations: Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, or Calafate (Argentina). Today you’ll spend your first night in this awarded eco-lodge inside the park.

On the way to your accommodation, we’ll take you to discover a couple other interesting places near Torres del Paine!

First, we’ll enjoy a close-up view of the lakeside in Puerto Natales, where a statue of Milodon – the last giant sloth that walked the Earth 5000 years ago – will be waiting at the entrance of this picturesque town to wave its bronze hand.

Once in Puerto Natales, walk along the shores of “Cabo Última Esperanza” or just relax in one of the little cafes in town while admiring the patchwork facade of colorful houses. Enjoy lunch before leaving town, and try the best seafood in Southern Chile.

We’ll continue by exploring the Milodon Cave, three prehistoric caves where the remains of a giant ground sloth were discovered in the 1890s. Before getting to the caves, we will pass by La Silla del Diablo and learn about its mysterious legend… a story told by the oldest man in Patagonia who believed that the Devil appeared to those who came looking for him on dark nights.

At the end of the day, we’ll reach Torres del Paine National Park and bring you to your dome to spend your first night inside the park. Enjoy dinner at the community dome and start making some new travel buds.

Day 2 - Excursion in Torres del Paine: Trek Base Las Torres

Over the next 4 days, you’ll be able to choose between different tours and hikes inside the park. Here are our recommendations for each day!

Torres del Paine is one of the most beautiful protected regions of South America, and the best way to explore it is on foot. If you like hiking and nature, our recommendation for this day is to take a hike to Base las Torres. This is the most famous hike in the park since it takes you to the base of the Cuernos del Paine (8500 f.o.s.l.); a challenge for climbers all over the world.

Cross Ascensio Valley, taking its winding path and gazing over Ascensio River until getting to the first stop, Refugio El Chileno. From here, you’ll continue for one hour through a lenga forest — the changing landscapes will combat any tiredness!

You’ll finally get to the moraine; the last beat of the trek, and the hardest. The last hour will be an uphill climb, but take your time, you’ll definitely make it to the top! Your efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking views of these massive granite mountains that extend past a blue lake and up to the sky. You can take a rest, enjoy lunch with a view, maybe spot an occasional red fox sneaking around, and then backtrack to the campsite.

Day 3 - Excursion in Torres del Paine: Boat Trip to Grey Glacier

For your second day in the park, we recommend that you take one of the most adventurous day tours to visit the amazing Grey Glacier. This is an optional tour that you can add to your travel itinerary, which will take you on a hike from Paine Grande Lodge along the shores of mountain-lined Pehoé Lake to the northern end of glacial Grey Lake.

Start by crossing Pehoé Lake in a medium-sized boat and reach Paine Refuge, where you’ll start the trek. Your main objective, after 3hr 30min, will be to arrive at the viewpoint of the huge Grey Glacier, emerging from the Southern Ice Field! Enjoy lunch with this amazing backdrop and then embark to get closer to Glacier Grey. Sail between floating icebergs and visit one of the biggest glaciers inside the National Park.

At the end of the experience, we’ll drive you to Pudeto to board another boat and cross Pehoé River. From the opposite shore, we’ll drive you back to the lodge.

Day 4 - Excursion in Torres del Paine: Boat Trip on Lake Pehoé and Hike along the French Valley

For this day, we recommend that you hike to the French Valley, the ‘heart’ of this incredible National Park.

From the lodge, we’ll drive you to Pudeto, where you will enjoy a 45-minute navigation to the opposite shore of Pehoé Lake. From there, start your trek towards the inner lands of the French Valley. This is a unique opportunity to visit one of the least-accessible areas inside the park, since there is no road nearby. But, with your own two legs, you’ll definitely make it!

What will you find in the French Valley? Hanging glaciers, pristine woods, and some daunting jagged peaks: the multi-colored Paine Grande and the forbidding Cuernos del Paine.

You can also cross the rope bridge over the French River to reach some stunning views of the French Glacier, or continue to the French Valley Plateau, or down to the Pehoé River and the glacier. How deep you go depends on your groups’ rhythm!

Take a rest and enjoy your boxed lunch while admiring the valley; the black mountains covered with snow, and the cawing of the kingfisher. After lunch, you can continue on an optional trek to get even farther into the valley, to Britanico Viewpoint. This is a high-difficulty trek, but it worth the effort, since you’ll discover all of the unique geological formations of the valley (like the Blade, Mask and Sword mountains).

At the end of this full-day experience, you’ll backtrack the same route and return to the lodge to spend your last night at the campsite.

Day 5 - ¡Adiós Torres del Paine!

In the morning we’ll pick you up from your dome and take you to any of the nearby cities with an airport (Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas in Chile, or Calafate in Argentina).

From the Perito Moreno Glacier, to the island of penguins in Ushuaia (Argentina), you can still discover many more natural wonders of Patagonia. Read about our 13-day and 9-day trip itineraries to Patagonia and get some ideas for your next travel adventure!

Thanks for all info, help and the organization of our trip !

I chose to travel with Say Hueque because we were looking for a trustworthy agency with knowledge and connections in Argentina and Chili. The booking process was smooth, no problems and good follow-up.

All hotels were good but Rio Serrano in Torres Del Paine was great. Our favourite excursion was the hiking in El Chalten and the mini-trekking on PMoreno- are unique !

Olaf from Urban biking and Nico on the full day TDP-trip did a fine job. Thanks for all info, help and the organization of our trip !

Thanks again for everything

I won a competition on facebook through TourRadar. I started rock climbing, hiking and in general outdoors activities in 2016 and I have always come across Patagonia as a must destination for climbers, hikers and mountain lovers. My first memory of Fitz Roy was when Tommy Coldwell and Alex Honnold did the Fitz Traverse in 2015 which means that they traversed all the towers in the Fitz roy range going up and down all in one push that took them a week to complete. Especially El Chalten and Torres del Paine were on my list for travelling destinations. So when I saw the trips TourRadar was offering in the competition I chose the 9 days Best of Patagonia.

The booking process was very smooth and I was communicating via email with both people from TourRadar and then with people from Say Hueque. Laura Rosales before we get to Argentina helped out a lot in terms of explaining things and booking the hotels we stayed at. All the hotels were lovely and we enjoyed our stay in every single one. Also Agostina was always available and was tracking down our whereabouts making sure everything was going alright. Thanks very much to both of you.

As I mentioned we really enjoyed our stays in all 3 hotels, but if I had to choose I would say Pudu Lodge was my favorite since El Chalten for me was the highlight of the whole trip. The girls in the front desk where amazing and super helpful. Also the location was terrific, just next to the hiking trails. My mom’s favorite was the one in Puerto Natales Weskar Patagonian Lodge because of the nice atmosphere and the great view.

My favorite excursion was the Torres del Paine with the border crossing over to Chile. Despite the cold, the wind and the really bad visibility it was a great excursion, with a great walk next to the lakes where we caught a glimpse of the rock towers, mainly their lower parts. But it was amazing to see the Chilean side of Patagonia as well.

My favorite moment from my trip was in day 1 when I reached the Mirador Laguna de los tres and the lake was frozen so I could walk on it. I got to the level of the lake facing the Fitz Roy range right in front of me and starting walking towards the granite towers. I was alone on the lake and the only thing I could hear was the sound of my footsteps on the snow that cover the whole lake. I would never forget the freedom, happiness and serenity I felt while I was so close to Fitz Roy and on a frozen lake. It never crossed my mind that Laguna de los tres would be frozen, I expected it to be a blue lake or even brown from the mud and melted snow coming from the mountains surrounding the lake. It was a lovely surprise.

Our guide in Perito Moreno Glacier excursion was amazing. Her name was Daniela ( I am pretty sure I remember correctly). She could speak English and German (and Spanish of course) and she was very sweet and knowledgeable and gave us a great overview of the park and Perito Moreno glacier. Everyone in the group had a great day in the Glaciers’ National Park.

I am extremely pleased about all the aspects of the trip. You guys did a great job organising everything perfectly. All I had to do was to follow the timetable and practise my Spanish with the bus drivers, taxi drivers, hotel employees, guides which I really enjoyed by the way, since I want to improve my Spanish level. My only complaint goes to the weather and particularly to a group of clouds that took away some amazing views of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and Torres del Paine. But I was aware of the Patagonian weather and how unstable and unpredictable it can be so I was prepared for the worst. Afterall no one can control the weather. To be honest we had some glorious, sunny days during our trip.

One last thing I would recommend would be to add one more day in El Chalten to itinerary (take one of the rest days in El Calafate and add it in El Chalten for example) since for me 2 days seemed a too few. I am saying that just in case the weather is not good and maybe somebody wants to try the trails again to get better conditions and views. The town and people of El Chalten were great and I would have loved to stay a bit longer there.

Thanks again for everything.
