EL CALAFATE & EL CHALTEN

Visit Perito Moreno Glacier & Mt. Fitz Roy - 6 days

El Calafate and El Chalten are home to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier and Fitz Roy Mountains, they embody the true spirit of adventure in Patagonia. On this 6-day adventure, you will tour Perito Moreno Glacier (the most famous in Patagonia) before continuing to the lovely mountain town of El Chaltén. Chaltén is a hiker’s paradise, home to the Fitz Roy Mountains and Cerro Torre. In this trip you will have plenty of time to hike the mountain trails at your own pace, and, once back to town, sample a delicious Patagonian asado (barbeque) and locally brewed beers.

Day 1 – Your Patagonia Adventure starts in El Calafate

Today, Southern Patagonia welcomes you with open arms. El Calafate is a jumping-off point for adventure travelers who chace to unearth the most spellbinding natural wonders of Patagonia, like the Perito Moreno Glacier.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world that’s still advancing.  Though it’s not the only glacier in the area, it’s the one that made the city of El Calafate famous worldwide. For many years now, El Calafate has been considered capital of the glaciers. Located at the shore of Lago Argentino (the southernmost, largest Patagonian lake) it’s also home of the Spegazzini Glacier, which forms the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the Upsala Glacier, named Glaciar del Gigante (Giant’s glacier) upon its discovery, which is the biggest glacier that sits at the mouth of Lake Argentino.

Is El Calafate all about the glaciers? Well, yes and no…glaciers are the main attractions that you can visit via hiking or a boat ride. But you have lot more to discover about Argentine rural culture. From Calafate you can also visit a typical Patagonian finca (ranch) and learn all about the gaucho (Argentine cowboy) culture  and enjoy a great asado. You’ll soon realize that Calafate is much more than the gateway to the Perito Moreno glacier. Upon arrival you will be taken to the hotel where you will have the rest of the day to relax or explore the surroundings.

Say Hueque Tips

Take a look at our Calafate Travel Guide to find more practical information about the city. Our advice: if you feel like exploring a bit on your own, you can take de 1 km hike to Laguna Nimez, an ecological reserve where you can spot 80 different kind of birds like flamingos, black-necked swans. Is not for free, but it’s really cheap!

Day 2 – El Calafate: Perito Moreno Glacier Tour

In the morning, we’ll drive you to Glaciers National Park to take the 6 hour long Perito Moreno Glacier tour. Get prepared to play with the giants!

Glaciers National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981 and is home to 200 approximately glaciers. Half of this park is occupied by the campo de hielo patagónico (Patagonian ice field), the largest ice field after Antarctica. You will travel 40 km (about 25 miles) from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park you will take the walkways to explore the different viewpoints, you’ll feel really close to the Perito Moreno Glacier! If you’re lucky, you may get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall to sink forever into the lake. During about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you might want to know…and you will learn things you might have never thought about.

After this visit you will take a boat ride that will take you close enough to fully appreciate the 80 meter (262 feet) high ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece.

Day 3 – From El Calafate to Hiking in Chalten

During the morning a minivan will pick you up at your hotel to start your 3 hour long trip to El Chaltén. You’ll travel along the famous Route 40, surrounded by the Patagonian steppe, pass through La Leona River, which connects Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma and where La Leona Road house stands, the chosen spot by the famous thieves, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid to hid for a month. We’ll make a stop so you can enjoy the bar and see the historical center.

After discovering other rough gems of this particular landscape (we’ll make some photo stops if the weather is nice), you’ll reach El Chaltén and we’ll leave you at your hotel.

El Chaltén is the top rated hiking destination in Argentina. This charming little village sits at the foot of Fitz Roy Mountain and it’s surrounded by glaciers, lakes, rivers and forest. It’s also the jumping-off point for most hiking trails. A paradise for sunny walkers and hikers alike.

Enjoy your first afternoon of leisure in Patagonia by relaxing in the local brewery or exploring the surrounding areas—Maybe stroll around a little waterfall…

Day 4 – Your free day in El Chalten

Today you can take one of the self-guided hiking trails around town and discover El Chaltén by your own, which is always an excellent idea. But, if you want to do something different, you can take a full day trip to Lago del Desierto (not included).

We’ll take you in a bus through the valley and along the Las Vueltas River till reaching the Natural Reserve Lago del Desierto, and then we’ll sail for 50 minutes in a comfortable catamaran crossing the lake from south to north.

What will you see on the way? The Crestón Glacier and the Huemul Glacier lying shyly over the mountains. After a short 15-minute stop, we’ll continue sailing to Vespignani Glacier where we’ll go ashore to take one of the hiking trails nearby.

You can choose between an easy, interpretative trail through the forest, or a 45 minutes hike to get to the Vespignani Glacier’s base and a jaw-dropping view of Mount Fitz Roy. It’s up to you, you can count on the assistance of the tour coordinator at any time. After the hike, we’ll take a snack in our geodesic tent just before sailing back to Punta Sur and take our bus back to El Chaltén.

Bear in mind that in the afternoon you will board your minivan to El Calafate, so you need to be back in time. The 3 hour long drive will be a good opportunity to rest or just relax and enjoy the passing landscape at your window.

Once you arrive at El Calafate, the minivan will leave you at your hotel. It’s your last evening in town, your last chance to try the tender and exquisite Patagonian Lamb or a heavenly tasting Calafate ice-cream. The trip was fabulous!

Dear Marcela,

Thank you for the email. I have already reviewed Say Hueque on trip advisor on the general site, will add comments to the forum too.

I first learned about Say Hueque from the Internet - reviews and trip advisor.

I decided to travel with you because of your promptness in response, ease of working, good customer service and a good price. Seamless experience - everything was flawless and we did not have to worry.

My favorite hotel is Don Los Cerros at El Chalten - very nice hotel, luxurious, superb location and views, spa - hot tub, good service.

The best excursion was to Laguna De los tres - amazing trek up - difficult but exhilarating - worth the effort once we reached the top.

The trip was fabulous!

Patricio was an excellent Travel Agent !

Dear Sol,

I Chose say hueque because I was unable to make reservation via fantastico sur directly. I also got Feedback during the Tour that People who booked with fantastico sur were very upset as some reservations were Not made appropiately.
Overall I was happy to have made it via say hueque (just found it with Google)
Best refugio was Torre Central. Los cuernos was small and bar had very Limited options. Paine grande we just had a tent and showers were just ok.

Food was Vetter than I expected.
Patricio was an excellent Travel Agent who was always very fast to answer any Question I had.

Best regards
Donny
