EL CALAFATE & TORRES DEL PAINE

Travel to Perito Moreno Glacier & Torres del Paine - 5 days

Some things are impossible to imagine until they are right in front of your eyes. Many people have seen stunning images of Patagonia, with its massive glaciers, rugged mountains and wide open, star-lit skies, but not many have stood side by side with these magnificent natural spectacles. El Calafate, Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres Del Paine National Park represent the most exquisite natural landscapes of Argentina and Chile. Tour Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres Del Paine and enjoy this true Patagonian adventure where you´ll discover the very best of Argentina and Chile.

Day 1 – Travel to Patagonia: El Calafate

Today, Southern Patagonia welcomes you with open arms. El Calafate is a jumping-off point for adventure travelers who strive to unearth the most spellbinding natural wonders of Patagonia, like Perito Moreno Glacier.

Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world that’s still advancing. Though it’s not the only glacier in the area, it is the one that made the city of El Calafate famous worldwide. For many years now, El Calafate has been considered the capital of Patagonia’s glaciers. Located on the shore of Lago Argentino (the southernmost, largest Patagonian lake) the town is also home to the Spegazzini glacier, which forms the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the Upsala glacier, named Glaciar del Gigante (Giant’s Glacier) which is the biggest glacier that sits at the mouth of Lake Argentino.

Is El Calafate only about the glaciers? Well, yes and no… the glaciers are the main attractions accessible through hiking or boat, but you still have much more to discover about Argentine rural culture. From Calafate you can visit a typical Patagonian finca (ranch) where you’ll learn all about the gaucho (cowboy) culture and enjoy a great asado (barbecue). You’ll soon realize that Calafate offers much more than just the gateway to Perito Moreno glacier.

Upon arrival, you will be taken to your hotel where you will have the rest of the day to relax or explore your surroundings.

Say Hueque Tips

Take a look at our Calafate Travel Guide to find more practical information about the city. Our advice: if you feel like exploring a bit on your own, you can visit The Glaciarium Museum and learn about the history of glaciers and their first explorers. To get to the museum there is a transfer you can take at the Tourist Office.

Day 2 – El Calafate: Perito Moreno Glacier Tour

In the morning, you will be driven to Glaciers National Park for your 6-hour Perito Moreno Glacier tour. Get prepared to explore Argentina’s icy giants!

Glaciers National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 and is home to approximately 200 glaciers. Half of this park is occupied by the Campo de Hielo Patagónico (Patagonian Ice Field), the second-largest ice field in the world after Antarctica

You will travel about 25 miles from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park you will take the walkways to explore different viewpoints, getting incredibly close to Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall, sinking forever in the lake below. For about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you want to know… and things you might have never thought about.

After that tour ends, you will take a boat ride that will bring you close enough to fully appreciate the 262 feet-high ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece.

Say Hueque tips

We also offer a second tour option to maximize your glacier experience: The Navigation Mayo Spirit Trek. This is a full-day trip to visit Perito Moreno Glacier (its front wall and the walkways) where you’ll also be able to cross a Patagonian Andean Forest and sail across Lago Argentino to discover other ice marvels of the area. Visit the millenary cherry tree with its 10-feet diameter trunk and spot the hanging glaciers of Mayo and Negro Hill — This is a different way to visit Perito Moreno Glacier!

Day 3 – El Calafate: Your Free Day

El Calafate adventures come in many different shapes and sizes. For your free day, we have an adventure suggestion that will get your wheels in motion to keep on exploring. Just ten minutes outside of town, you’ll find a 3000-foot-high hill, where you’ll have stunning views of Lake Argentino, Mount Fitz Roy and Torre.

Take a day tour (not included) to ride in a 4×4 right to the top of this hill, where you will spot the Perito Moreno Glacier emerging little by little from La Cordillera de los Andes (The Andes Range). This is also a place to find archeological treasures (like millenary shark teeth or petrified oysters) from different geological periods of Earth.

For the second part of the trip, you’ll hop on a mountain bike to get back to El Calafate. On the way you’ll stop to grab a bite, take pictures, spot wild guanacos and challenge your riding abilities with various types of terrain as you cross marshes and rocky pathways until you reach civilization again. Nature, history and adventure, all in one trip!

If you would like to add on this tour for your free day, just let your travel advisor know.

Day 4 – Torres Del Paine Tour

In the early morning, we’ll pick you up to start your trip to Chile and your full-day visit to Torres del Paine National Park. It’s going to be a long day, but it’s worth every minute.

First, we’ll drive through the Patagonian steppe for 2hr 30min (you might be able to see rheas, guanacos, Patagonian hare, and even condors!) until reaching the border of Chile in Cancha Carrera, where we’ll go through customs.

We’ll keep traveling through isolated and windy landscapes, occasionally dotted by guanacos and native green-orange-tinted bushes; you’ll truly feel the momentous solitude which characterizes Patagonia. Torres del Paine is a gift that keeps on giving; it will unveil its enthralling natural beauties little by little…

Along a winding road, we’ll make different stops to have a close-up view of various attractions like Cascada Paine (Paine Waterfall), Paine Range at Lake Sarmiento, and the Paine Horns at Lake Nordenskjold. Depending on the weather, we’ll depart on an hour-long walk to reach the lake and get closer to the striking mountain peaks. At midday, after having stopped by the Lago Pehoé Viewpoint to gaze at the vastness of the French Valley, we’ll have our boxed lunch with this mountainous backdrop.

At the end of this dreamy travel experience, we’ll drive you back to El Calafate to enjoy your last evening in town.

We have had a brilliant trip - thank you for all your help.

We have had a brilliant trip - thank you for all your help.

The holiday was brilliant. We walked ca 140km, ascent of ca 4,000m and loved the scenery. Arrangements were all great - other than the pick-up at Laguna Armaga - and your information and guidance invaluable.

If I could change anything, it would be:

Hotel at Torres Central instead of the Refugios - but the Refugios was fine.
Would have been good to appreciate more that the transfer from Calafate to Laguna was a shared trip and to have been offered a private transfer as an option
Refugios Paine Grande - not great. Fully appreciate perhaps no other option, but a bit dirty and more of a youth hang-out. Refugios Cuernos is a gem and Central also absolutely fine.

We enjoyed it all and aim to return.

Highlights - Mt Fitzroy - trek to Laguna Los Tres, restaurant Fugeria in El Chaltén, Mirador Britannico.

Thank you for everything.

We certainly enjoyed our trip to Argentina and Chile, and would not hesitate to recommend Say Hueque.

Hi Tina,

We are well thank you and trust you are too.

We certainly enjoyed our trip to Argentina and Chile, and would not hesitate to recommend Say Hueque.

We choose Say Hueque due to its prompt feedback and attention to detail. Our favorite hotels were Gray Lago and Altos Ushuaia. Our favorite excursion was Tierra Del Fuego & Torres Del Paine. Scenery and expert guides. If I need to mention the best guides were Matheus @ Huellas der Sur & Joachim @ Canal fun.

I had only two comments I would like to say: Mirador Del Lago Hotel rooms and linen were looking old. Altos Ushuaia Hotel was substandard for our level of travel. All the rest was great!

Kind regards to you and Patricio.

Brian & Louis Rohrs.
