EL CALAFATE & TORRES DEL PAINE

Travel to Perito Moreno Glacier & Torres del Paine - 5 days

Some things are impossible to believe until they are right in front of our eyes. Patagonia evokes images of massive glaciers, rugged mountains and wide open, star-lit skies. El Calafate, Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres Del Paine National Park represent the most stunning natural landscapes of Argentina and Chile. Tour Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres Del Paine and enjoy this true Patagonia adventure where you´ll  discover the best of Argentina and Chile.

Day 1 – Travel to Patagonia: El Calafate

Today, Southern Patagonia welcomes you with open arms. El Calafate is a jumping point for adventure travelers who strive to unearth the most spellbinding natural wonders of Patagonia, like the Perito Moreno Glacier.

The Perito Moreno glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world that’s still advancing. Though it’s not the only glacier in the area, it is the one that made the city of El Calafate famous worldwide. For many years now, El Calafate has been considered capital of the glaciers. Located at the shore of Lago Argentino (the southernmost, largest Patagonian lake) it’s also home to the Spegazzini glacier, which forms the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the Upsala glacier, named Glaciar del Gigante (Giant’s glacier) from its discovery, it is now the biggest glacier that sits at the mouth of Lake Argentino.

Is El Calafate all about the glaciers? Well, yes and no… the glaciers are the main attractions accessible through hiking or boat but you have a lot more to discover about Argentine rural culture. From Calafate you can also visit a typical Patagonian finca (ranch) and learn all about the gaucho (cowboy) culture and enjoy a great asado (barbecue). You’ll soon realize that Calafate offers much more than being just the gateway to the Perito Moreno glacier.

Upon arrival, you will be taken to the hotel where you will have the rest of the day to relax or explore the surroundings.

Say Hueque Tips

Take a look at our Calafate Travel Guide to find more practical information about the city. Our advice: if you feel like exploring a bit on your own, you can visit The Glaciarium Museum and learn about the history of glaciers and its first explorers. To get to the museum there is a transfer you can take at the Tourist Office.

Day 2 – El Calafate: Perito Moreno Glacier Tour

In the morning, you will be driven to the Glaciers National Park for your 6 hour long Perito Moreno Glacier tour. Get prepared to play with the giants!

Glaciers National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981 and home to 200 approximately glaciers. Half of this park is occupied by the campo de hielo patagónico (Patagonian ice field), the largest ice field after Antarctica. You will travel 40 km (about 25 miles) from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe.

Once inside the park you will take the walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and you’ll feel really close to the Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall, sinking forever in the lake. For about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you want to know…and things you might have never thought about.

After this visit you will take a boat ride that will take you close enough to fully appreciate the 80 meter (262 feet) high ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece.

Say Hueque tips

Here it goes a second option to optimize your glacier experience: The Navigation Mayo Spirit Trek. This is a full day trip to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier (its front wall and the walkways) but also to cross a Patagonian Andean Forest and sail the Argentine Lake to discover other ice marvels of the area. Get to the millenary cherry tree and its 3 diameter long trunk and spot the hanging glaciers of Mayo and Negro Hill—A different way to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier!

Day 3 – El Calafate: your free day

Adventure in El Calafate has different kind of colors and shapes. For your free day, our suggestion is to get those wheels in motion and keep on exploring.

Ten minutes away town stands a 900 metres high hill from where you can get stunning views of Lake Argentino, Mount Fitz Roy and Torre. Take a day tour (not included) to ride in a 4×4 right to the top where you will spot the Perito Moreno Glacier emerging little by little form La Cordillera de los Andes (The Andes Range).

It’s also a place to find archeological treasures (like millenary shark teeth or petrified oysters) from different geological periods of Earth. For the second part of the trip, you’ll get on your mountain bike to get back to El Calafate. On the way you’ll stop to grab a bite, take pictures, spot wild guanacos and challenge your riding abilities through climbing or crossing marshes and little lagoons till reaching civilization again—Nature, history and adventure, all in one trip!

If you would like to add this tour for your free day, just let your travel agent know.

Day 4 – Torres Del Paine Tour

In the early morning, we’ll pick you up to start your trip to Chile and your full day visit to Torres del Paine National Park. It’s a long day but it worth every minute.

First, we’ll drive through the Patagonian steppe in an overland during 2.30 hours (you might be able to see rheas, guanacos, Patagonian hare, and even condors!) till reaching the border to Chile at Cancha Carrera, where we’ll go through customs. Things to take into account: it is not allowed to take any fresh food, plants, seeds, etc. from Argentina to Chile. They are very strict, and fines can be high. If you are not sure if something is allowed or not, please declare it (they will provide you with a form) and they will inform you if you can carry it or not.

We’ll keep on traveling amid isolated and windy landscapes, occasionally punctuated by guanacos and native green-orange tinted bushes: Here you’ll truly feel the momentous solitude which characterized Patagonia.

The park won’t amaze you at first sight. Like a shide lover, it will unveil its enthralling natural beauties little by little. Through winding road, we’ll make different stops to have a close up view of Cascada Paine (Paine Waterfall), Paine Range at Lake Sarmiento and of Paine Horns at Lake Nordenskjold. Depending on the weather, we’ll perform a 1 hour long walk to reach the lake and get closer to the striking horns. At midday, and after having stopped by the Lago Pehoé Viewpoint to gaze the vastness of French Valley, we’ll have our box lunch at this mountainous backdrop.

At the end of this fabled excursion, we’ll take you back at El Calafate and leve you at your hotel. Rest a litlle and go out to enjoy your last evening in town.

Thanks again to Say Hueque and especially to you & Lucia and all the other people who helped me have a wonderful holiday.

Hello Marcela
How are you ? I hope you are fine. Apologies for the long delay in responding. I had to go back to work the day after getting home from South America and then two friends from London arrived to stay with me for two weeks so I've been busy looking after them.

I heard about Say Hueque, from searching the internet for local travel agents in South America.
I like to use local businesses when i travel. That way i know i'm contributing to the economy and the locals like to present their country the best way possible.

My favourite destination was El Calafate. I loved the little town. My hotel was upgraded and the excursions to Perito Moreno and Torres Del Paine day trips were excellent.

My favourite hotel was Mirador Del Lago in El Calafate & Don Tomas in Atacama were both very good and hard to choose which one was better out of the two. Very good service at both hotels. The meals in the restaurants were delicious. The facilities and location was also very good and suited my needs

About the excrsion, it is hard to choose between Perito Moreno & Iguasu day trips. Both were excellent. But the organisation in El Calafate was probably the better out of the two.

Guides, They were all pretty good.

I think the full day trip to Argentine side of Iguasu is a bit too much if people are not doing the boat rides. There should be an option to do a half day trip without the boat ride. Because only 2 people in the group did the boat ride and the rest of us just sat around. People can spend the time to look at other waterfalls in the area but after a whole day of walking around it's very tiring for some people.

Thanks again to Say Hueque and especially to you & Lucia and all the other people who helped me have a wonderful holiday.
Regards
Catherine

The whole trip was great for a solo traveller and the places/location visited were stunning.

Hi Patricia,

I knew say hueque visiting the tourradar travel site.I watched your web site and I found the ideas and travel offers good.

The whole trip was great for a solo traveller. The b&b were ok and the places/location visited were stunning.
The only think to underline is that in el chalten there were no active ATM nor banks. This means that you cannot take any money once you there.
My highlight of traveling with you was that I could avoid any intermediate company and have a packed trip planned.
My favorite hotel was El chalten cyan for the breakfast and my favorite excursion the personal boat tour in Ushuaia. The best guide was Nico on Torres del Paine tour

Communication in general and in specific cases could be improved. Like the one of no ATM in el chalten. Patagonia Sur is expensive.

Have a good day,
Daniele

Overall, we were very pleased with the tour and were particularly impressed with you, Rodrigo. Everything ran smoothly and was first-class. Thank you to everyone at Say Hueque.

Rodrigo,
We have returned from Antarctica and are home safe, sound, and happy. Below are my replies to your questions. Overall, we were very pleased with the tour and were particularly impressed with you, Rodrigo. We appreciated all the work you did to put us back on schedule after the late arrival of our plane. That was very helpful; we could not have done it on our own. Everything ran smoothly and was first-class. Thank you to everyone at Say Hueque.

I found Say Heque on the internet when looking for Patagonia tours.
The best aspect of our experience was in the planning--being able to get answers to our questions from someone who was familiar with the area, hotels, and tours; and having every detail arranged for us.
There was only one hotel on our itinerary--El Mirador del Lago, but we thought it was very nice. It was in a good location, attractive, friendly, the rooms were nice and clean, and the bathrooms were modern. (Due to a flight delay, Rodrigo arranged a nice hotel in Palermo that we also enjoyed.)
My favorite excursion was Perito Moreno glacier, because we got close to the glacier and had time to absorb the beauty from many angles and take pictures. However, I enjoyed them all for different reasons.
I am sorry, I did not write down the names of our guides. Our guide at Christina Estancia on the historical tour was very good. (We did the ATV tour first, then ate lunch and did the historic tour last.) Our guide in Torres del Paine was easy to understand and very nice. I remember she lives in a small town, has two young children, really loves her work, and it shows. The guide who was with us to the Chilean border spoke particularly good English and explained the border crossing very well. All the guides were friendly.
I would like to see more detail on the invoice to know exactly what was included. Much of our pre-trip communication was through emails and the final invoice did not specially list all that was discussed. For example, the transport from the airport to our hotel on the last day was not listed. I had to search through emails to verify that it had been arranged. Also, lunch for the Christina Estancia was not clear; it appeared that lunch was included, but then on the boat we learned that it was not. I would like to see each item listed: transport between airports, flight info, transport to hotel, hotel, tours, specific lunch (who provides), etc. The transportation and lunches were not clearly explained or listed. (I guess we had chosen to have a box lunch rather than the lamb, but we were not told how to get that box lunch, nor did we have a choice in sandwich.)
