HONEYMOON IN ARGENTINA Self Drive – 16 Days

Tour Argentinian & Chilean Patagonia and Buenos Aires

Get behind the wheel and discover Argentina at your own pace. Our Argentina Honeymoon Self Drive visits Buenos Aires, Bariloche & the Lake District as well as the highlights of southern Patagonia, including Calafate’s Perito Moreno Glacier, Chalten’s lovely mountain trails and of course, the spectacular Torres del Paine, Chile.
Self-drive tours (road-trips) are considered one of the best ways for independent travelers to visit a region at their own pace. The route is planned in advance and nights are pre-arranged in select hotels. Honeymooners are given a suggested route (with maps) and they are free to make as many stops as they desire.

Day 1 - Your Adventure in Argentina starts in Buenos Aires

Welcome to Argentina!

Capital of Argentina and described as the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires proudly embraces this title, as well as shows off plenty of its own culture! Explore the traditional European architecture, the cobblestone streets lined with rustic outdoor cafes, the local antique and artisanal markets that offer plenty of bargain shopping, and the mouthwatering aroma of prized Argentine beef sizzling on an open “parrilla” (barbeque) in the air. Buenos Aires is home to some excellent local designers and you will certainly find the perfect leather jacket, long leather boots and handbags for all occasions. Though above all, Buenos Aires is known as the home of the tango. Be sure to enjoy a traditional dinner-tango show and explore the colorful San Telmo and Recoleta neighborhoods.

Upon arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred in a private service to your hotel leaving you the remainder of the day to explore the city and possibly get your first glimpse of the Obelisco, Casa Rosada, or the tree-lined streets of Recoleta.

Day 2 - Buenos Aires Tour and Tango Show

You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning for the city tour. Over the course of a half-day tour, you will have the chance to visit San Telmo, the historical and political centre of the city known for La Boca, a historic neighbourhood with a strong European flavour. This is the part of the city where Buenos Aires turns colourful and tango is ever present. Also take a trip to the aristocratic neighbourhood of Recoleta, where the big palaces remind us that Buenos Aires was once the Paris of the South.

Duration: 4-5 hours.

In the evening, you will be picked up from your hotel to be driven to one of Buenos Aires’ most emblematic cultural highlights: a dinner and tango show offering the spectacular demonstration of the finest local dancing accompanied by delicious Argentine cuisine and all the malbec you like. At the end of the evening you will be driven back to your hotel.

Total duration (dinner + show) 4 hours.

Day 5 - Bariloche Tours

Day at leisure to enjoy any of the available routes:

Seven Lakes Road to San Martin de los Andes:
Known around the world for its incomparable beauty and its magnificent and panoramic points, this route connects San Martin de los Andes with Villa La Angostura along 107 km, crossing two different National Parks that offer breathtaking views of lakes Machónico, Falkner, Villarino, Escondido, Correntoso, Espejo and Nahuel Huapi.

El Bolson & Esquel
There are two different possibilities for making this trip:

  • By Route 40: an asphalt road of 161 km that runs through a landscape of foothills and plateaus. It is the fastest option between the two cities.
  • By Los Alerces National Park: this option takes you down a 193 km route along Route 40, and then to the provincial routes 15 and 71, which are gravel. This road is longer and more difficult but has the advantage of crossing one of the most spectacular national parks of Argentina: Los Alerces National Park. It borders the Rivadavia, Verde and Futalaufquen lakes.

Mount Tronador
Tronador is a volcano located along the border between Argentina and Chile, inside two national parks, Nahuel Huapi and Vicente Pérez Rosales. With an altitude of 3,470 m, the mountain hosts eight different glaciers. Its name (thundering mountain) was given in reference to the sound of falling blocks of ice.

You will pass by La Leona River, which connects Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma. El Chalten is a top rated trekking destination and is known as the Argentine capital of trekking. Located at the foot of the Fitz Roy Mountain, surrounded by glaciers, lakes, rivers and forest, it is still a hidden gem of our south. The charming little village, which is also the starting point for most trails, is a paradise for walkers and trekkers alike.

On arrival you can explore the surroundings, have a stroll around a little waterfall, or just relax in the local brewery. You will spend two nights in our selected accommodation.

If you are looking for great mountain views, in one hour and a half you can be at the Cerro Torre view point.

For trekking fans, continue all the way to Torre base or go on the 8 hour trek for the most impressive view of Fitz Roy and the whole massif by Laguna de los Tres trail (highly recommended!). This is a trek that becomes difficult in the last bit but is totally worth the effort.
You can choose where and when to go, and at your own pace, since the trails are self-guided and very well marked and maintained. We will provide you with complete trekking information of the park, so that you can decide the best plan to make the most of your day.

Day 12 - From El Calafate to Torres del Paine

We recommend starting the drive to Torres del Paine (210 km ~ 130 miles) in the morning in order to have the afternoon at leisure and to do a full day panoramic visit to this national park.

Along the road you might be able to see rheas, guanacos, Patagonian hare and even condors. There, you will start to travel through the beautiful South Chile until you arrive at the “Torres del Paine” National Park (“Blue Towers” in the Tehuelche language, due to the predominant color).

It is important to remember that today you are crossing the border into Chile. Please make sure that you have your original passport with you.

Keep an eye out for wild guanacos as they roam the windy plains. It is a long day, but we believe it deserves every hour. Some of the wonders of the world renowned park that you will visit will be Salto Grande, Laguna Amarga, Lago Pehoe, the Cuernos del Paine and of course, the famous Torres del Paine.
Accommodation in your selected hotel in Torres del Paine during 2 nights.

Day 13 - Torres del Paine National Park

Day at leisure to enjoy any of the available trekking (trails are all well-marked and maintained.) To make the most of your experience, today we recommend that you trek to the base of the magnificent Torres del Paine.

You will get to the foot of the 900-meter granite Paine Horns, which is a challenge for climbers all over the world. This trek takes 8-10 hours for the round trip. The first 2 hours are very tiring, since you will be walking up, leaving the valley where the Hosteria and Refuge Torres del Paine are. But after this, and with views of Ascencio River, you will have a nice walk until you get to a refuge (Refugio El Chileno).

From here, you have one more hour through the Lenga Forest until you finally get to the moraine. This is the last beat -and the hardest. But every effort will be compensated with breathtaking views of these massive granite mountains that rise beside a blue lake up to the sky.

Other interesting routes to follow:
– Lago Grey
– Salto Grande & Lake Pehoe
