SALTA: ADVENTURE TOLAR GRANDE

Description

Tour Salta and experience the surreal and vast salt flats where time seems to stand still. A paradise for any photographers!

Day 1 - Salta, welcome to your Argentina northern trip

Welcome to Salta!
One of traveler’s favorite cities, Salta offers outstanding museums, colonial architecture, alive cafés in the main plaza and the vibrant and authentic peñas, places where locals grab a table to watch their favorite folkloric singers and after a wine (or two) everyone join for dancing. The perfect base to explore the north of Argentina.

Upon arrival you will be driven to your hotel (shared service) having the rest of the afternoon to explore the town. Since city stress has not arrived here, bear in mind that during siesta time most of shops are closed.

Day 2 - Salta Tours: Discover Tolar Grande

Very early in the morning – before breakfast – we leave from Salta to Tolar Grande town.

On route we will pass through Campo Quijano and probably we will stop by the longest viaduct of the famous Tren de las Nubes, known as the Toro Viaduct.
During the trip we’ll go through “Quebrada del toro” (bull gorge). Also we’ll visit Santa Rosa de tastil where we’ll make a short stop to help our breathing get more accustomed to the altitude and San Antonio de los Cobres town, where we’ll stop for lunch (not included).

Then we’ll go to the west up to the highest point, Abra Alto El Chorrillo (4.560 m.a.s.l.) from there will go down through the Salt Lakes (salar de pocitos). After a couple of hours, we will make a stop in a natural viewpoint called Siete Curvas (seven curves), were we can appreciate one of the most wonderful highlights of the trip: The incredible “Desierto del Diablo” described as a postal of Mars with its bright red colored rock formations.

We’ll cross this amazing area and after one hour and a half we are going to arrive to Tolar Grande, located in the corner of the great Salar de Arizaro.
Tolar Grande is a small village with no more than 400 inhabitants. There we will appreciate an abandoned train station that used to be a part of the industrial trail that connected Argentina and Pacific in the 19th century. After the military coup in 1930-s the trail was closed and the city nearly disappeared.

Currently the city has a medical center, a small hotel, a couple of cafes, grocery, church, school, police station, tourist information office, radio, internet access, but nearly no telephone signal.

Day 3 - Tolar Grande - Cono de Arita

Breakfast at the Refugio.

Today we’ll have a Full Day Excursion to “Cono de Arita”. We will reach another area attraction, known as “Ojos de Mar” – 3 small lagoons formed millions of years ago in the salt flats, located 2 km away from Tolar Grande, and a must-see on this trip.

We’ll continue the trip to Salar de Arizaro (salt lake), which is one of the biggest salts in the world. During the road you will be able to watch the High Andes Range on the horizon.
Finally we’ll arrive to the highlight of the trip, an interesting formation, called “Cono de Arita” located in the centre of this salt flat, with perfect lines and forms that appear to be surreal.
Return to our Refugee in Tolar Grande. Accommodation in Mountain shelter.

Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch & Homemade dinner.

Day 4 - Tolar Grande to Purmamarca

After breakfast we’ll continue the trip to San Antonio de los Cobres. The road offers amazing landscapes and mountains, with contrast of colors everywhere.

A part of the tour will be along the same route as the famous Tren de las Nubes, zigzagging on lonely roads between the blue sky and the high desert plains.

San Antonio de los Cobres – one of the smallest villages in the region – will be our next stop. After having lunch (not included) we’ll continue on our way to the north to reach the amazing Salinas Grandes – The Great Salt Flats -(4.200 m.a.s.l.)

The salts are perfect for amateur and professional photographers alike- where the natural light and reflections provide ample opportunities to test your creativity to the fullest. We are going to face up the final part of the excursion taking the spectacular mountain road “Cuesta de Lipan”, to finally reach the town of Purmamarca, located at the base of Jujuy´s famed 7-colored mountain.
