Solar Eclipse Tour 2019 Argentina – San Juan

Visit San Juan & see a total solar eclipse

What is a solar eclipse? It’s when the moon stands between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight. The Earth loses its brilliance for a while—it’s the moment to gather and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In 2019, five eclipses (solar and lunar) will happen on Earth: 3 of them can be seen in Argentina! Take this 4-day trip to San Juan Province, one of the top spots to see this (literally) out-of-this-world natural phenomenon and enjoy the spectacle from the best front-row seats. Discover the amazing Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), and meet its peculiar “statues” carved by the windy passing of time. Witness the famous geo formations and rugged mountains that give this desert landscape its moonlike aesthetic

Day 1 - 30th of June - Arrival to San Juan: tour the city

Upon arrival to San Juan Airport, we’ll drive you (bilingual assistance included) to your hotel in San Juan city, also known as Oasis city, since it stands amidst true arid landscapes. This is the capital of the province and the jumping-off point to visit the Ruta del Vino (Winery Route) around Valle del Tulum, the birthplace of the popular red wine, Syrah.

In the afternoon, we’ll pick you up at your hotel and a local guide will take you on a half-day visit through the highlights of the city. You can marvel at the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (the founder of public education in Argentina) childhood home, the cathedral (one of the most modern in the country), the Juan Victoria Cultural Complex and Auditorium which has a specially designed Concert Room with outstanding acoustics.

After the historical visit, we’ll head to a bodega (winery) where we’ll have a guided visit to learn about the wine production methods of the region. We’ll keep traveling to see the Ullum Dam, the top tourist hub for aquatic sports and adventure activities. This is where people come to sunbathe and swim beside a forbidding rocky backdrop, to cope with the face-melting Summer weather.

The day will end with a visit to the olive fields to learn about the production of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and taste some regional products, followed by a visit to the beautiful Zonda Gorge, home to Eduardo Copello racing track, the most famous of South America. At the end of this rich and varied day, we’ll drive you back to your hotel.

Day 2 - 01st of July - Moon Valley tour

Enjoy a full day tour to the amazing Ischigualasto Park, commonly known as the Moon Valley. This paleontologic reserve is the only place on Earth where the remains of the Triassic period (when dinosaurs began conquering the planet and the first mammals appeared) can be observed in their most complete and organized collection.

We’ll pick you up at your hotel and drive you to Caucete, the wine town famous for its Wine and Grape Festival, and also visit the sanctuary of La Difunta Correa, a miraculous folkloric figure visited by thousands of pilgrims each year. The legend says that this is a place where miracles truly take place… are you ready?

After getting in touch with some traditional Argentine mysteries we’ll head to San Agustín del Valle Fértil, and from there, to the Provincial Park Ischigualasto (the Moon Valley). Take your time to wander the place and find the distinctive rocky formations which cover the property, and which locals are known to nickname: the  “Submarine” (really huge!), the stoic “Sphinx” or the beautiful “bocce ball court,” which looks like a giant game board.

During the visit, you’ll be assisted by a specialized guide who will tell you interesting paleontology facts, and enlighten you even more about the history of this unique place. At the end of the day, we’ll drive you back and leave you at your hotel in San Juan to rest up for the coming day’s activities.

Day 3 - 02nd of July - The Solar Eclipse

Here it is: the day when all your anticipations come to an epic end… Today you’ll witness one of the most amazing phenomenons on Earth, and from a truly privileged place.

Bella Vista is a town located 3 hours away from San Juan. Positioned just nearby is the private campsite where you will spend the day and wait for the solar eclipse. This exact place (with coordinates: 30°27’1.63’’S – 69°15’ 57.36’’O) was selected by NASA as one of the most accurate sites in the surrounding area to see this particular eclipse of the sun, since it stands directly beneath the eclipse path.

This won’t be a massive, publicly accessible event. The campsite is prepared to host up to 400 people whose spots have been booked  in advance. So hurry up, and don’t lose your chance to be part of this special day!

We’ll pick you up at your hotel early in the morning and you will travel (bilingual assistance included) from San Juan to Bellavista, where you’ll spend the day enjoying the 12-acre campsite. A special breakfast will be waiting for you at roughly 11 a.m., so make sure to try the traditional sopaipillas al disco (a fried little tortilla) with a hot coffee. On the edge of camp, you’ll find one big tent where buffet lunch (free meal and beverages, including wine, craft beer and water) will be served at midday. Enjoy a mouthwatering empanada criolla (delicious Argentine meat and other flavored pies), assorted salads, regional cold cuts and a tender piece of asado (grilled meat) while lounging in any of the chilling-out places (wooden furniture style) prepared for you to eat and relax. There will also be toilettes available, and a big fire near the “kitchen” (the corner of camp where meals will be prepared) where you can congregate.

Get ready to spend the whole day outdoors! We will already be months into experiencing our winter season here in Argentina, so keep in mind that winter clothing will be a must (a warm jacket, winter hat and even a warm blanket if you like).

While we wait for the natural spectacle to start, we’ll enjoy a musical display of folkloric rhythms. The solar eclipse will commence around 4:15 pm (local time), and it will take an hour for the moon to be in its perfect position, followed by another hour to end its passage between the Earth and the Sun. The total eclipse will take place at 5:40 pm. For the duration of two minutes, the moon will totally block all sunlight, and shadows will cover the campsite. This is an experience that will resonate and remain beyond your return; a story you will definitely tell your grandchildren about. Finally, at the end of the day, we’ll drive you back to your hotel in San Juan.
