Trekking TORRES DEL PAINE “W” Circuit – 5 Days

Hike through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile

How does it feel to sleep between the mountains and starlit skies? There is only one way to find out… tackle the most amazing hiking circuit of Patagonia on a 5-day adventure in Torres del Paine National Park and unveil the mystery. Hike through beech forests, blue-water lakes and colossal mountains, and stay at different refuges inside the park. Hike to discover the famous granite Paine Towers and the magnificent Paine Horns, all while enjoying breathtaking vegetation and wildlife.

Day 1 - From Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine - Chile Tours

Torres del Paine is a National Park in Chile Welcome to the wildest National Park

Today, your ultimate adventure in Patagonia begins; the W Circuit in Torres del Paine National Park. This protected area, declared a Natural Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is visited by thousands of travelers each year. But not all of them venture to complete the 5-day W Circuit, named after the shape the circuit depicts on the map.

The journey starts with a pick-up at your hotel and a transfer to the bus station of Puerto Natales. Take a 3-hour regular bus towards the main entrance of Laguna Amarga, where a shuttle will take you to Las Torres Refuge to spend your first night in the park. You’ll have the rest of the day to explore the surroundings.

You can enjoy a 1hr 30min easy walk to reach the Nordenskjöld Lake shore (watch out for the wind!), or visit the first organic vegetable garden in the area (at Hotel Las Torres), and learn about the specific techniques used to grow vegetables under the challenging Patagonian weather conditions.

Say Hueque Tips

Let’s talk about Torres del Paine weather… as in any Patagonian spot, weather can change from hot sunny mornings to cold freezing nights, all in one day. The best way to fight the Patagonian weather fluctuations is to “dress as an onion” (wear layers; thermal and waterproof underwear are always a good choice), bring a really good rucksack cover and dry bags (really useful to keep your bag and clothes dry) and, much smaller but not less important, a buff! (which can be used as sweat-band and scarf).

Day 2 – Torres del Paine National Park: The fabulous granite skyscrapers

Patagonia hiking is an amazing experience in ArgentinaWhat will you do?

Wake up and breathe in; the smell of adventure is in the air. Today you’ll take the most famous hiking trail of the park to reach “the fabulous 3”: the Torres del Paine granite walls, Torre Norte, Torre Sur and the kingly Torre Central.

First, you’ll cross the Ascencio Valley on a 2-hour walk through green steps, uneven pathways and beech forests until reaching El Chileno Refuge. From here, take a 1hr 30min fairytale-path crossing a forest of unbelievably tall and thick lenga trees and reach the base of the moraine, a steep mass of  boulders.

Behind them you’ll find the iconic towers, reflecting their stunning image in a blue-water lagoon. Enjoy your boxed lunch in this hiker’s heaven (you may see a red fox or two…), and then backtrack along the same way.

Today you’ll depart from Las Torres Refuge and return to the same spot, so we recommend that you start at around 8 am, so you don’t waste any daylight and avoid crowds. Things you shouldn’t forget: a small rucksack, a reusable water bottle (you can fill it up in any river) and your hiking poles. When you’re walking, look up to the sky! These are the lands of the majestic condor, the biggest flying land-birds on Earth.

Day 3 - Torres del Paine Tour: The Great Horns

Patagonia hiking is an amazing experience in Argentina What will you do?

Today you’ll take all your hiking gear and move to the next stop: Los Cuernos Refuge. Start the day with a relaxing walk through a non-challenging trail called Paso de Los Cuernos. Move along the enchanting Nordenskjöld Lake with its beautiful views of Mount Almirante Nieto as an amazing backdrop.

Cross the bridge over Arrero and Bader River to reach the refuge, lying at the base of the second rocky highlight of the park: The Paine Horns. Enjoy the views of these three outstanding black and white mountains which stand over the valley like two massive orca whales, spot hanging glaciers, and discover the great variety of native vegetation.

Enjoy the tranquility and amazing backdrop of Los Cuernos Refuge on an easy and beautiful trail. Keep in mind that it can get really muddy after the rain, so if you’re departing on a cloudy day, you have to be prepared!

After breakfast, start this full-day walk heading to Italiano Campsite at the entrance of French Valley. Warm up with the first 2hr 30min of easy trail until the bridge over the French River. Leave your heavy luggage at the Italiano Campsite, outside the rangers office (with the rucksack cover on top in case of rain), take your small backpack and head to the French viewpoint (1hr 30min) through a woody-trail, and discover hanging glaciers.

The last part of this hike will lead you even deeper into the valley, to the Británico Campsite and it’s amazing viewpoint. Continue hiking for 3 hours to the upper side of the valley and reach Británico viewpoint; you have reached the core of Paine Massif! Relax and enjoy the views, and discover the imposing Mount Fortaleza. Return by taking the same trail back to Italiano Campsite and continue walking for 3 more hours to reach Paine Grande Refuge. Walk along the north face of Skottsberg Lake, while admiring a couple of old friends, the Paine Horns.

This is the longest hike of the journey, so we recommend that you start a little bit earlier this morning, at around 8 am. When you reach the French Viewpoint, be ready to witness an incredible spectacle; you may even see avalanches! Also enjoy the views of the French River along the way, where you’ll have the chance to see huemules (the southern Andean deer).

Day 5 - Your Patagonia Adventure - The Southern Ice Fields

Patagonia hiking is an amazing experience in Argentina What will you do?

This is the last day of your W Circuit Trip. Hit the trail, passing by Mount Paine Grande, Lake Pehoé, and Los Patos (The Ducks) Lagoon, where you’ll find the first viewpoint and the highest spot in the trail. Watch out for your beanie! This is a very windy area.

On the way, you’ll also discover the diverse native vegetation and wildlife, walk among Coigües woods and enjoy the whistling of more than 115 Patagonian species of birds. Reach the second Glacier Grey Viewpoint (the second highlight of the day) and catch your breath; a lake full of floating icebergs is waiting for you. Backtrack to Pehoé Lake and embark on a 30min trip to cross the lake and reach Pudeto area, where you’ll board your bus back to Puerto Natales.

Thanks again for everything

I won a competition on facebook through TourRadar. I started rock climbing, hiking and in general outdoors activities in 2016 and I have always come across Patagonia as a must destination for climbers, hikers and mountain lovers. My first memory of Fitz Roy was when Tommy Coldwell and Alex Honnold did the Fitz Traverse in 2015 which means that they traversed all the towers in the Fitz roy range going up and down all in one push that took them a week to complete. Especially El Chalten and Torres del Paine were on my list for travelling destinations. So when I saw the trips TourRadar was offering in the competition I chose the 9 days Best of Patagonia.

The booking process was very smooth and I was communicating via email with both people from TourRadar and then with people from Say Hueque. Laura Rosales before we get to Argentina helped out a lot in terms of explaining things and booking the hotels we stayed at. All the hotels were lovely and we enjoyed our stay in every single one. Also Agostina was always available and was tracking down our whereabouts making sure everything was going alright. Thanks very much to both of you.

As I mentioned we really enjoyed our stays in all 3 hotels, but if I had to choose I would say Pudu Lodge was my favorite since El Chalten for me was the highlight of the whole trip. The girls in the front desk where amazing and super helpful. Also the location was terrific, just next to the hiking trails. My mom’s favorite was the one in Puerto Natales Weskar Patagonian Lodge because of the nice atmosphere and the great view.

My favorite excursion was the Torres del Paine with the border crossing over to Chile. Despite the cold, the wind and the really bad visibility it was a great excursion, with a great walk next to the lakes where we caught a glimpse of the rock towers, mainly their lower parts. But it was amazing to see the Chilean side of Patagonia as well.

My favorite moment from my trip was in day 1 when I reached the Mirador Laguna de los tres and the lake was frozen so I could walk on it. I got to the level of the lake facing the Fitz Roy range right in front of me and starting walking towards the granite towers. I was alone on the lake and the only thing I could hear was the sound of my footsteps on the snow that cover the whole lake. I would never forget the freedom, happiness and serenity I felt while I was so close to Fitz Roy and on a frozen lake. It never crossed my mind that Laguna de los tres would be frozen, I expected it to be a blue lake or even brown from the mud and melted snow coming from the mountains surrounding the lake. It was a lovely surprise.

Our guide in Perito Moreno Glacier excursion was amazing. Her name was Daniela ( I am pretty sure I remember correctly). She could speak English and German (and Spanish of course) and she was very sweet and knowledgeable and gave us a great overview of the park and Perito Moreno glacier. Everyone in the group had a great day in the Glaciers’ National Park.

I am extremely pleased about all the aspects of the trip. You guys did a great job organising everything perfectly. All I had to do was to follow the timetable and practise my Spanish with the bus drivers, taxi drivers, hotel employees, guides which I really enjoyed by the way, since I want to improve my Spanish level. My only complaint goes to the weather and particularly to a group of clouds that took away some amazing views of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and Torres del Paine. But I was aware of the Patagonian weather and how unstable and unpredictable it can be so I was prepared for the worst. Afterall no one can control the weather. To be honest we had some glorious, sunny days during our trip.

One last thing I would recommend would be to add one more day in El Chalten to itinerary (take one of the rest days in El Calafate and add it in El Chalten for example) since for me 2 days seemed a too few. I am saying that just in case the weather is not good and maybe somebody wants to try the trails again to get better conditions and views. The town and people of El Chalten were great and I would have loved to stay a bit longer there.

Thanks again for everything.

The seamless organization was our highlight of traveling with Say Hueque.

We were happy with our experience of booking with Say Hueque. Very happy that all our tickets bus, ferry etc were organised too. It saved us a lot of hassles.
I found Say Hueque through Internet research.

The responsiveness and availability of English speaking people to help book tours made us to choose to travel with you. The seamless organization was our highlight of traveling with Say Hueque.

Our favorite hotel is Torres central Refugio. I would recommend booking Paine Grande Refugio instead of camping for the W trek. We were able to upgrade. But if we hadn’t been able to upgrade we would have left our last day by staying in camps which were nice but definitely not as food as the Refugio.
